Right now, the D80 with a kit lens is around $1000 and it still sells even though everybody expects the D90.
I bought my GX10 a year ago and back then, the D80 was $1300 with a kit lens and it was already a year old.
Considering how well Nikon is doing at the moment, the features announced on the D90, and Nikon's lineup, I bet you it will be closer to $1500 than $1000 (body only)!

I gave up crack because it was eating my lens money

. Here the word is that the initial price will be 1000 Euro (I don't know if kit of body only). Right now D80 body only is 630 Euro (incl. VAT) and 860 Euro in kit with 18-135. So, 1000 doesn't seem so far fetched and I think Nikon mirrors prices in euro/USD.
