Hugin.
Not just for wide, you can make it any size. I have done a lot of landscape using 6x6 or more shots.
Be sure to use manual and lock the exposure from the center though.
Have fun.

I use the Photoshop "Photo Merge" function. It has been a part of Photoshop for a long time, but Adobe significantly improved it a few versions ago. It is extremely powerful, correcting for exposure and some lens anomalies. Though I have not used it, I understand Adobe also includes the "Photo Merge" in Photoshop Elements.
I created the attached image using Photo Merge from 12 images (2 high x 6 wide) captured using an ist Ds, in 2010.

Looks great, but I am more looking for a free or cheap standalone or plugin for Apple Aperture.

Hugin.

It has a fairly simple assistant that will manage most of everything for you, or you can tweak and fiddle every conceivable aspect of the merge.

Hugin is free, but I find that you get what you pay for. I've never had any luck getting it to align images correctly.

DoubleTake is $25 shareware. I would leave a link to their website, but it seems to be down.

Kolor Autopano Pro or Autopano Giga. Nothing else comes near especially for handheld pano shots.
