Posterizing of Web Images

I noticed today that pretty much all images that I view online - either in Chrome or Firefox - had very noticeable posterisation banding. I know it's something to do with the browsers because when I download images (photos or even plain gradients) and view them with a normal image viewer (FastStone in this case) they look relatively fine. Also, I think the issue is something to do with Windows (7) because when using both Chrome and Firefox on my Linux Mint laptop the same images don't look anywhere near as bad. FWIW, both computers have nVidia GFX cards.

Has anyone else got similar issues?

I finally fixed my Chrome problems I think. It turned out to be a network problem. My 2nd access point was failing at layer 2. Popped in an older unit as a replacement and I'm seeing much fewer problems.

I have no problems with banding. Firefox 40.0.3 on Win 7 Pro.

Is it possible you are seeing failure to support ICC v4 embedded profiles in a standards compliant manner?

That appears to be true. By the way that site is talking there isn't much I can do about it.

Edit:

Oh, it appears that it's only Flickr and a sports website that are giving me trouble; the Guardian, for example, looks fine.

I'm having the same issue, seems that ICC Version 4 is not working.
Have a look at the tests on this website to see what I mean.
Is your system ICC Version 4 ready?

@114: nope, you have a different issue. This issue is about ICC V2 color profiles. ICC V4 profiles are not supported by Chrome, they are too slow and have too many security issues at this time.

Moreover, ICC V4 was principally designed for use in the printing industry (CMYK color process). I wager your screen is not CMYK. And if you do want to proof CMYK content on a an RGB screen in a web browser before sending content to a print production line run, I'd recommend you use specialist software for that. Any mistake in proof costs real money. The printing house will invoice you regardless of your mistakes.

So TL,DR; practical use-cases for ICC V4 profiles in a web browser: currently about 0."
