You can do it when ever you want. No need to wait until it is empty. Clean the battery grip contacts between grip and body. Maybe it is a good idea clean also the battery power contacts, in the battery and inside the grip.
By the way, my K10D behaves quite odd way when battery is allmost empty and internal flash is used. After pressing shutter button, flash fires, shutter obviously functions (sound) and.... camera reboots :-)
Nothing is written to memory.
When this happened first time I was quite frightened, thought that it was completely broken. But, no, it is just too empty battery. Without flash you can take some tens of pictures before battery is completely exhausted.
