I've had similar experiences to your at HCE. Usually they are pretty even-handed, though once the owner/manager did admit that Canon and Nikon were the easy sales and there was little to no risk in for them, unlike when he used to push Konica-Minolta (before Sony resurrected the mount).
The last time I was there, though, I asked about the used Pentax lenses and the sales guy said "there's not any market for them". I literally laughed out loud and asked if he'd actually checked ebay lately. I told him that the prices are insane there. (Okay, I probably just ruined it for us, but they didn't have anything worthwhile.)
I bought a couple of Pentax lenses from them in the past, and paid dearly for them. I did it mainly to vote with my wallet. However, I'm just as happy buying online, and using HCE for all my other photographic needs.
All in all, I think it's a good place to shop. As good as any brick and mortar, at least.
