I lived in Greenland for 3 years. And the general story about the colorful houses, is that, 100 years ago The Royal Greenlandic Trade Company (a danish goverment company controlled by administrators i Copenhagen) had monopoly on al trade to the island. They shipped paint as they liked, so if you wanted to buy paint for your house, and the red paint was sold out, you could wait one year for the next ship to arrive, or buy what color was left. When the Danish govement 50' years ago decided to develop Greenland, and bagan to construct new houses for the public masses, danish arcitects decided this should be "the greenlandic style". So even today all houses are painted in different colors.
Greenland is an fantastic place to take pictures. The air is so clear and dry, that on a normal day you can see over 400 kilometers from a moutain top.
