Best way to photograph moving objects ?

Within the past few months I started using the back button for focussing.
I don't photograph action shots much, but yesterday I photographed a water skier.
I had my camera set to continuous shooting at high speed.
I held down the back button and shutter at the same time so that it would continuously focus and shoot.

Is this the best way to photo action shots and keep them in focus ?
Does "moving object" mode do better ?

Rather than rely on autofocus tracking
(which is not always implemented optimally on a Pentax),
I prefer to prefocus on a certain point,
and then shoot when the action reaches that point.

An old trick from the days when the only way to focus was manually.

That said, I don't have a K-3, whose AF may be good enough.

Move, a lot, in every sense.
Anticipate where the culminating moment of the action will take place and move to a vantage point. then move to another place. try to get as many different perspectives as possible. It`s difficult to think about it and composition while trying to get the subject in focus and in an interseting pose. Generating many alternatives gives you options for later. Practice panning a lot and turn off SR.
