Here's a fun little project just in time for the holidays and one that's been around for a long time.
It's a DIY bokeh filter. I cut out discs from black construction paper to fit my UV filter and cut out a shape in the center (about 15mm). I use another UV filter to hold the disc in place. The shapes are only limited by your imagination and cutting skill (I used a exacto knife).
Works best using a lens with a large aperture. I'm using a Pentax FA 50mm f1.4 .
You can buy a bokeh filter set online for about $25, but this method will run you pennies for a sheet of paper. I've included some sample images. Looks like I need to clean up the round design a bit.
