645Z sensor: DxOMark strikes again ...

I read the following on the DxOMark website last night regarding their assessment of the RED Helium 8K sensor:

"RED’s prototype Helium 8K sensor has shattered our previous top DxOMark sensor score. With a dramatic jump to 108, it leaps past the only other sensor to have broken the 100 barrier – RED’s own Epic Dragon prototype (101 points)."
https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/RED-Helium-8K-DxOMark-Sensor-Score-108-A-new...me-high-score2

"the only other sensor to have broken the 100 barrier" ... really? I seem to recall a certain sensor whose results had been published (leaked?) for a few hours a while back that also broke the 100 barrier. I think the 645Z got an overall score of 101 if I'm not mistaken.

I also remember that we were promised a full fledged review of the Z, but we are still waiting for that. Does someone have any news on a forthcoming DxOMark review of the 645Z, or should we just forget about it?

It should be available when the 645ZII will be discontinued.

Honestly, Ricoh should put a lawsuit. Isn't there some sort of media law to correct errors, if not the one against lies? Because as silly as DXo is, some people take it as serious as a religion. Some people literally buy and sell their whole system based on those "lab test numbers".

Either way, looks like the results of the 645Z will only be published once 35mm FF DSLRs start hitting those scores, so that Pentax will never be at the top. So we will have to wait a couple more years

And on top of that, they measured their own DXO camera in the special feature (similar to Pixel shift), but did not publish the results of the K-1 with PS used correctly

It is strange. I remember earlier in the comments section of that DXO review there are at least three complaints regarding the unpublished 645Z review. Now it is gone?! Could someone else confirm this? I hope I'm not imagining things.

It is really weird they don't test the 645D or 645Z.

DxOMark, like Phase that also produces image processing software, has a biased agenda. No surprise but of little consequence one way or the other. DxO is only known to hardcore enthusiasts. If you asked the average Canikon shooter who never shoots off the Green mode and shoots JPGs only, who/what DxO is all about, you'd get a deer in the headlights look.

Yea this sounds dubious. K-1 with correctly used PS exposure goes well over 100 on that scale. But well, DxO has failed many times before. They are giving bad scores to almost every Zeiss lens due to vignetting which only makes photos look better.

I'm not someone who's into conspiracy theories, or complains that stuff is being swept under the carpet all the time. When DxO did not release the 645Z's results I was under the impression that they may be in the process of testing a bunch of medium format sensors, and wanted to release the scores together.

Now, after all this time, and the above quotes, I change my mind - they did sweep it under the carpet, because it seems they weren't happy about it. Or because certain corporations they depend on aren't happy about it.

If i had to hazard a guess, it would be because they lacked the technique and skill to get the most out of it.

645D had been fully tested and the test published :

https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Pentax/645D

"Not having the skills" for a company leading market sounds a bit trollesque....

The reasons behind no-publication for 645Z's test are purely commercial...

And they did test the 645Z, and found outstanding results.

The excuses for not releasing them at the time were like, "Oh, it's August, no one's back at work yet, etc".

Sounds like they have fostered a healthy work ethic.

Yes.

My bet is that they will publish the Z test once GFX and 1D will be tested.
There is no way they will carry on ignoring medium format sensors....
