Both, vertical, horizontal, XOR.
fucus area means you test whole area but by selecting 0-3 you can chose which parts of which sensors you are testing, read lower...

However I do notice that when I set the AF Area value to other than 0, 3 AF confirmations LEDs will light up when I focus the test chart instead of 1. (And this is when the camera is set to use the center AF point). Dont know what that means though, do any of the others notice this behaviour too?
confirmed, I did test what 0-3 are for

Anyone else experience this or is there any way to get rid of the header.
I have reloaded 1.3 but to no avail. Is there an English language version of the software around?

these two are slightly misleading. there is a trick for Vista!
a) connect camera to PC and turn it on
b) install program
c) click button sequences to get you into debug
d) turn off camera and unplug it but DON'T exit the program!!!
when the program is still running it remembers! so when you connect the camera again it will turn the debug OFF just fine! If by chance somebody else turns the program off, then:
a) connect camera, turn it on
b) reinstal the program
c) click the sequences for camera to get out of debug
works like charm....
to 0-3 options in AF area test:
0 - tests both horizontal and vertical lilnes in single AF area
1 - couples TWO areas that are nearest to the focusing point! The lines on our AF areas are much bigger then the little red dots and some of them are overlaid! that means when you are focusing in this mode 1 using say top left AF point, and the contrast section of the pic goes horizontaly, the vertical line of top centre can register it too and will lighen up too! etc
2 - uses vertical lines of AF sensors only! (for some reason my central AF was unable to focus in this selection

)
3 - uses horizontal lines only! f.e.: most left and right sensors which are vertical only won't be able to fucus
