Exposure metering time

I can't see why it is possible to select different light metering times ( 10 second default, 3 seconds, or 30 seconds). Why would someone need to use different exposure metering time? If there is not benefit to use the default 10s setting, then I'd only think that some battery power saving is possible by selection a 3s metering time.

Determines how long the meter stays on. So if you are trying to save battery use a short time, if you working slow and fiddling with things use a longer time. Otherwise the meter times out before you are ready and you have to wake it back up to take the shot.

What he said. Finding the camera "asleep" when go to make a setting change is a pain.
