Fastest 'cheap' video?

Looking to measure some dynamic stuff for work.

120 FPS seems pretty attainable... are there cheap (less than $2k) cameras that can do 240FPS? What's the cheapest camera that can do 120 FPS? What's the cheapest camera that can do 240 FPS?

Well, it depends on the resolution you want. Sony FS700 is beast!

Yup. 1920x1080 should be fine I think.

So there seems to be a bunch of options... any recommendations?

Full HD and $2000 is already pushing it; I'm not aware of any consumer device that does 240 fps at that resolution. The Panasonic V750 apparently captures 1080p120 and can interpolate to 240 fps, though this is probably best done in post.

There might be an industrial camera that does 1080p240 cheaper than the Sony FS700, but I wouldn't know where to look for it...

Thanks.

Interpolation is not desired. I can interpolate myself. Their interpolation would just confuse me.

May I ask why you want 240 fps?

To measure the oscillations of a serpentine belt on an engine. The firing frequency actually goes up to 400 Hz, but that's at a high RPM. 240Hz would get me to ~1800 RPM with Nyquist rate.

Most cheaper cameras that offer high frame rates seriously drop resolution. Some go up to (theoretical) 1000fps but with laughable resolutions. The Canon PowerShot only films with 320x240 pixels @ 240fps. More professional systems have higher stats but are way more expensive. Even the kickstarted Edgertronic with 720p @ 700fps is going to cost $5.500.

There's a Guardian article from 2013 that lists several consumer products: Wanted: a cheap compact camera for shooting slow-motion videos.
Since then there's probably some newer models with better stats. LUMIX DMC-FZ200 could be a valid option. It can do up to 120 fps @ 720p and 240fps at VGA resolution and is only around $500. The DMC-FZ1000EB is a bit more expensive and films with 100fps at full HD.

Side note, you'll need some good lighting at those speeds.

FS700 is the only truely affordable high speed IMHO.

For what you want to measure, how about trying a regular camera at 25 or 30 fps, but use a strobe light to illuminate the subject - once the stobe is firing a short enough burst, the belt will appear stationary to the video camera, then you can just offset the timing of the strobe to shift the belt to a different position in its movement.

This is close to how you see the timing mark on a crankshaft stay stationary when hit by a timing light, when setting the ignition timing.
