A7RII: 50mp sensor

According to rumor, the A7RII is going to sport a 50mp sensor:
(SR4) Trusted source: I am 99% sure the new A7rII is coming with “50Mp sensor”. | sonyalpharumors

Of course, we can safely assume it's going to have the 5 axis stabilisation from the A7II as well.

This means that it will STILL produce 33mp images with APS-C lenses! Higher resolution then the APS-C flagships. That's a first.
Clavius, did you just divide 50 by 1.5 to get that 33?

If so, that's an amazing concept you have of sensors and their areas.

Think again.

Perhaps only two of sonys lenses will be up to the task of delivering enough resolution to such a sensor, and neither of them are zooms.

To be honest. I don't see much use for such high MP's yet. For cropping purposes is usually the answer, but for that the lenses do need to be able to resolve to that extend.

The problem which such high megapixel cameras is that buffer size and frame rates tend to be poor. I would rather have two cameras -- a full frame with not so many megapixels and an APS-C camera with high megapixels for the situations where I need more reach. I do think we are getting to the place of diminishing return. There isn't a huge benefit in resolution going from a 16 megapixel APS-C to a 24 megapixels APS-C and I doubt there will be a big difference going from 36 megapixel full frame to 50 megapixel full frame either.

More pixels just as everybody around me is getting older and uglier...... typical!

I have a face built for about 2 MP....must admit my body needs more pixels as each year passes though.

I don't even see the point from a landscape standpoint. How many folks really have hit the printing/viewing limit of 36 megapixel full frame yet? I have 24 megapixel APS-C and I don't maximize that.

Well, I guess we'll see if Sony can make this camera have better high iso.dynamic range while increase the pixel number. Looking at the K5 to K3 move, I doubt it. Probably about the same dynamic range (maybe a little less) and the same high iso, but with more resolution at lower iso, would be my guess.

given plenty of D800 users found their techniques struggled with 36mp, is this thing going to be a tripod-only affair?

24mp in the A7 is more than enough....I don't really see the point in 50mp. The average user ends up losing most of those pixels when downsizing to post images online.

I'm thinking of the 40mp Nokia phone. It did some neat trick with those 40mp which resulted in good low light performance at an output of 5mp. Admitted, I have no clue how that worked and if it would work with the Sony 50mp. But if they did something like that, then I'd understand and see its use. High res during good light, and sacrificing that res for increased low light performance when light gets poor.

Or maybe it's just marketing counting on people craving the camera with the biggest numbers?

Yep. I would be very happy with 24mp for both. Cropping headroom for telephoto shots on APS-C, and bigger pixels on 36x24 for the low light stuff.

This is good news. If nothing else, it will put pressure on the whole tool chain to improve; camera chips, firmware, processing software. So then I can finally have Lightroom that doesn't freeze processing K5II RAW files.

Now this would be interesting! Much more attractive than just a regular 50MP. If they can do some "sensor magic" and increase dynamic range, bit depth, lower the amount of noise.. then 50MP might make sense. But if its the same old sensor style as we had for years now, just a lot more resolution, then meh

Edit: Of course, it should be noted that Sony also has the A7s 12MP thing, which is on the other end, so even if you don't want crazy high MP, there is a whole spectrum of cameras that you can think about. What Sony is doing is basically not giving buyers any excuse to buy another system. Want low MP count? A7s. Want full frame? 24MP? 50MP? Got it all. The main problem is with lens lineup and overall ergonomics, as far as I have read about the Sony system. Exactly the things where Pentax tends to be strong.
