Must be time for a K3 update then. Good. I am looking forward to seeing how Pentax progress the K3

I was looking at this camera side by side with the 7100: new sensor, iso 25600, better video, 12 raw buffer, wifi, nfc, zebra stripes + "Just as in the earlier D7100, the dust-and-weather sealed body has magnesium-alloy panels top and rear"... I've seen a d600 that was splashed with some water and it stopped working.

Now I am only thinking about getting a K3...Am i wrong?

D7200 seems a very incremental revision to the D7100.

More of a K-3 catch-up - copying the K-3 buffer size and -3EV autofocus, but still unable to match the K-3's frame rate

One thing the arrival of the D7200 means is that any K-3 II will now (I bet) include WiFi and NFC, and a few other performance tune-ups to keep it a smidgen ahead of the D7200 in a few key areas.

Fixes a couple of problem areas on the D7100, adds wi fi and is a little smaller.

This is why the camera market is drying up. Why would anyone who owns a D7100 be interested in this?

By adopting more or less the same sensor as the K3 (Sony 24 Mpix), Nikon acknowledge that the K3 has a better sensor...
But I Wonder how they can claim a 2 stop gain in high iso performance.
I would like to see a K3 with a 24 Mpix backlit sensor that would boost iso performance

That would be nice. Some of the newer Sony 24MP sensor's (as used in the A6000, and the D3300/D5300) seem to offer a slight step ahead of the D7100 and K3 in high-ISO performance, judging by their DxOMark low-light scores. But it's only about a 10% improvement. Sony doesn't seem to be able to push 24MP APS-C sensor performance much further at the moment. Maybe Samsung will shake Sony up.

If Nikon are claiming a '2 stop' improvement in high-ISO performance, they are over-stating it. It seems all they are really saying is they have boosted the ISO range of the camera from max ISO 51,200 (with the D7100) to max IS0 102,400 (with the D7200) - with the catch being that ISO 102,000 is only available in black & white mode.

It may be incremental, but the new sensor can be important. The one in the 7100 as well as the D5200 had a reputation for banding in the shadows when pushed hard in processing. The D7000 didn't suffer from that. Hopefully the new sensor has resolved that.

It is still an APS-C sensor and without some kind of weird magic, it will be within spitting distance of existant cameras. The K3 got a sports iso score of 1216 and the D7100 1256. There is no way you could actually tell the difference between those.

By adding iso 102,400, Nikon is just joining the idiot feature race, where you offer features that look fine on paper, but aren't even usable in real life. Max I normally use on APS-C would be 12,800 and even then, it doesn't look great.

Bythom or one of Thom's variant pages will have a time of it. He's devoted to Nikon but will shred them for wasting store shelves with minimally changed bodies.

Edit.. Man he's quick :-)

That does seem to be what Nikon does. The problem is that if there are a lot D7100 camera bodies still out there (that seems to be true), who is going to buy a new D7200 versus a discounted D7100, unless they happen to be the sort of person who always has to have the newest and the best (although my guess is that those folks would gravitate to the D810 or D4s).

The swiftness of model "upgrades" of cameras for Canikon is truly fascinating. They're gradually slowing down... Finally Pentax can catch up. In a world where "something new" makes headlines, Pentax should use it to their advantage- if the market sees there's more "new" things coming from someone else they might take interest. Sort of.

also, what does engadget mean with the D7200 being "lightweight"?
