K-3 / K-5 II / K-50: Don't forget the extended warranty!
Posted By: Adam, 10-09-2013, 12:00 PM

If you live in the US, you can get a 2-year warranty extension on any new camera purchase with the warranty card below ($19):

Pentax 2-Year Extended Warranty for Pentax and Ricoh 85716 B&H
Pentax 2 Year Extended Warranty for all current Pentax DSLR, Compact and Q Cameras. (Total Warranty 3 years - 1 Year Standard + 2 Years Additional)

This warranty is valid for all Pentax and Ricoh cameras (DSLRs and compacts).

The warranty card must be purchased at the same time as the camera to be valid. This card must be purchased within 30 days of receiving the camera and is valid even if you purchased the camera from a different retailer in the US. If it's back-ordered that the time of purchase, that's OK- the original invoice date is all that matters. (updated Jan 2015)

Seriously? Why not? Are there other states that are excluded?

This extends it by 2 years, for 3 total. $20 still ain't bad, even for just that 3rd year. And I don't usually buy extended warranties, but this is dirt cheap. Had it on my K-5 that I sold a few months ago. Forgot to get it on my K-5IIs.

The extended warranty is for service work.

So... Are you saying that CRIS, Pentax's official US service center located in AZ, will not honor the extended service warranty, if the return address is FL?

You sure about that?

Just curious... M

BTW: I figured these little machines are quite complex, so I bought the Pentax extended warranty for my K20, K7 and K5. As it turned out, each camera required repair work at about 18 months, but within the covered period. My only out-of-pocket cost was shipping to CRIS with return shipping paid by them. The repairs took less than two weeks door to door. Without the extended warranty, the cost would have been big $$$, so it all worked out well with no problems since.

  • Pentax Ricoh warrants to the original purchaser the product to operate according to factory specifications for a period of three years from the original date of purchase (one-year standard + two-year extended)
  • Pentax Ricoh will provide, at no charge, one complete check-up at any time during the warranty period. This includes inspection of all camera functions to see that they meet factory specifications.
  • NOT VALID IN FLORIDA, THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA OR WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.
  • Can only be purchased within 30 days of original equipment purchase.

It is pretty standard for fine print in the warranty to address individual state laws. If the warranty covers the device, not personal injury or damage to accessories certain states may not allow those exceptions. So some companies will make the warranty void in that state. I have no idea if that is the case here, but it is pretty standard. It's near impossible to read the fine print on everything...

In practice I would expect you would receive the same warranty service as in any other state.

Buying with most credit cards will double the original one year warranty. Whether it also will double the extended warranty (if purchased with the credit card) I do not know but I somehow doubt it.

Seems like the service provider, CRIS, should be able to clarify... right? Why not just ask them and stop spinning your wheels, here?

My experience with Pentax/CRIS has only been good.

Cheers... M
