Prices for a new Sigma 8-16mm are rather low....
Posted By: sholtzma, 10-07-2015, 04:22 AM

I found this on Amazon.... get a new Sigma 8-16mm for $530. Has the new price been dropping lately?

Don't know about price, but the 8-16 is an awesome WA. Widest rectilinear available and IMHO, excellent IQ, considering it's range, even outstanding.

ADDED LATER: The only drawback: it is big and heavy. Sigma's 10-20 is probably the best compact, lightweight ultra wide currently available, although the 10mm Samyang has an excellent reputation (without AF or the flexibility of zoom range of course).

got one from Tokyo in June for the equivalent of 400 USD. Brand new from Amazon JP. Excellent lens.

I'm going to guess no warranty since it's coming from the land of Japan, but the price is very tempting.

They're still going to about +-$700 new on eBay & some dude trying to sell a used one for $675.

I have to agree that it is a great lens and $530 is a Great Price!

These are still available brand new in Pentax mount from Sigma, contrary to rumors often encountered that it was discontinued (well, who knows for sure, maybe it was discontinued in manufacturing, but they seem to have a large number in Pentax still waiting to be sold). The "Brand New from Sigma" price is $700.

I'm still trying to decide whether to keep my Pentax 12-24, or replace it with either a Sigma 8-16, a Sigma 10-20 f3.5, or a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6.

In any case, I had been checking out used versions of the 8-16mm and then was shocked to see the price new. Why would it have no warranty?

it is 54000 yen on Amazon JP. That is about 440 USD. Pentax mount is available. They had a 10 percent off promo in June when I bought mine.

Seems like a really nice price. I paid $500 for a new 10-20/3.5 and would have certainly gotten this if it had been at this price then.

I have the Pentax 12-24mm. Currently I'm thinking about picking up either the Pentax 10-17mm fisheye or the Samyang 8mm fisheye. But I wonder if this Sigma might be the way to go. I wonder if it's different enough from the 12-24 to be worth it.

Because it's a Japanese market lens that wasn't imported into the U.S. by Sigma. Most manufacturers won't honor a warranty under those conditions. But the Japanese seller might honor a warranty if it's coming from a real store there. You'll have to check them to make sure.

If you already have the Pentax 12-24 I don't think it's worth it. The Sigma 8-16mm is difficult and expensive to mount filters and is quite a heavy lens. I also believe there is too much overlap with the Pentax given it is a relatively expensive lens to add to your kit bag.

The fisheye gives you a quite different field and point of view and is super lightweight. I also believe it is different enough as well as being relatively inexpensive, especially in the USA.

Personally, I would get the DA10-17 if you already have the 12-24 and like it. It is wider @ 10mm than the 8-16 @ 8mm, even after de-fishing in Lightroom's lens profile, and *much* wider uncorrected. The fisheye perspective gives you different creative options given that you already have an extremely wide rectilinear lens.

I had the 8-16 for a month, and really liked it. Images from that month can be seen HERE. I just love my DA10-17 and DA15 more, and couldn't justify keeping another big lens.
