Wide-Angle FF Pentax SMCP-FA J F4.0-5.6 AL for $199 New

Not a stellar performer but a budget alternative to most FF wide-angle lenses out there

There is a rumor that the "J" on the FA J series stood for "junk" or "jobber."

interesting, mainly in that this lens has been out of production for ten years.... where has this one been hiding?

Once in Laredo Texas in one outlet store i find severals F50 1.4, AF. 1.7x teleconverters and some F100 macro, and some Sigmas and Vivitar lenses for Pentax, the F50 and the tele1.7x with very good prices about 70usd, other F100 was expensive at 600usd, the sigmas and vivitar were "meh" lenses, and they have more for other mounts... I recall a vivitar serie 1 wel regarderd for but was for Y/C...

So i think once the most photostores closed and dont selll their old stock maybe some of the outlet stores buy very cheap in bulk the lenses.

I have found that my Sigma 8-16mm does a more than good enough job on the K1 set at 16mm and the camera on FF for anything really wide I need, and anything that might show up on an edge I don't happen to like can be cropped out easily enough, till something better than costs $1500 happens along anyway.

A few months ago there was a thread here about the same lens being offloaded for 99 AUD on an aussie site. It makes me wonder how many new, old stock products are sitting in a warehouse, practically forgotten.

An unfounded perception. They may not be the best lenses in the world, nor will they survive years of heavy use in the field by a professional photographer, but they aren't garbage. They do their job creditably.

There is a surprising amount of NOS lenses out there. For example, my local shop has a NOS FA 24-90 in their display. Their asking price is kind of high at $400.

I thought the J unofficially stood for "jumpered" since there isn't an aperture ring. The contact for the A setting is essentially jumpered to the body.

There must be solid demand for wide-angle FF for K-mount at the moment. Lens makers pls note!

A saw a 10+ year old Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG Aspherical for Pentax sell for AUD $850 on eBay recently.

A very high price, but understandable, perhaps, since at the moment the Pentax 15-30 wide zoom is about AUD$2000.
