Remote Cable Switch and Menu Functions

Bought a remote cable switch but not a Pentax one. Works fine re shutter release but the menu function won't display when the cable is attached to the camera socket. Is this the case with the Pentax one?

I have a Canon remote for my K10D and when it's plugged in the menu functions work.

How are you doing ? Busy on this side . My Pentax cable is working fine with the menu displaying . Can you try plugging the cable first then switch the camera on ?

Thanks Patrick and Tran. I did connect the cable first before turning the camera on. I'll experiment a little more and check with the seller if necessary.

Been quite busy here too Tran. Waiting for word to see if Canadian Immigration are going to approve our application to emigrate to BC. Should hear something in the next few weeks.

Still can't get menu or playback functions with the remote cable attached. Is it normally just a case of attaching the cable before turning the camera on ie: no need to change any settings?

Remote control and settings?

I've just bought a cable control (unbranded Canon type from 7dayshop) and it works perfectly on my K100D super. You have to set the camera to remote control in the Fn menu though. For my camera that's press Fn, then top arrow of the four way control. This brings up the 'drive mode' menu. From there move across the symbol menu to the remote control symbol, press 'ok' and then Fn to set and return to shooting. Another thing it says in the manual is that AF must be set to 'AF by remote control' in the Custom menu before you can use the AF function in RC (Haven't tried that yet. D'Oh! Really must start playing with it). Hope this helps with your camera. Ray

Thanks Ray. I've just finished doing further experimenting this morning and I have worked out what is happening. I realised that the camera was autofocusing as soon as I turned it on with the cable inserted. I realised that the button must be sticking in the half way down position. As soon as I eased the button up with my thumb nail, the menu functions and playback were available. The button seems to be catching a little on the housing causing it not to come fully back up when released. It seems to be freeing up with use though so I think it is going to be ok. I don't need to go into Fn to select Remote though (I thought this was just for the infra red remote). It will work fine in normal mode. I have been into custom to allow AF with remote.

remote

"I don't need to go into Fn to select Remote though (I thought this was just for the infra red remote)." Glad you got it sorted Paul. I didn't think about the IR remote for the settings. It simply refers to 'remote' in the manual. D'Oh! Don't Pentax realise that their cameras are being used by people like me with less brain cells than pixels I really do need to play about with it some more.

You and me both Ray. I wandered around the other day shooting away thinking the camera was in AF mode. I forgot I'd had it in Manual the day before. Depressing how I could miss such a basic thing. Got away with it on the whole cos I was shooting landscapes. Must learn to keep taking note of the info in the viewfinder!

I have a 3rd party remote cable release made by Yongnuo and it does everything, including menus, in normal shooting mode. It was intended for the canon XTI and I had to trim the plastic, just a slight bit where it enter the plug well. It worked without trimming, but it would pop out on occasion. Now it stays put. I bought it off Feabay for $8 and it arrived within a week from Hong Kong. It seems like four times as many professionals are leaving the UK as usual this year. Anyway, "welcome to the new world". I think that you will find the people here, just a nice as those in England, I know that I did.

Thanks for the info Dave. Still waiting for the decision over our immigration application. Hopefully should hear something in the next few weeks.
