540/360 af assist only?

So for the longest time I discounted the naysayers who thought pentax's AF system was sub-par. However, recently I've been doing some more challenging (for the af) and I find my k10ds AF is just not up to the challenge, frequently missing focus or even not locking at all (and yes this is using center point, focus on the eyes and recompose) To be fair, it is in pretty low light, and with moving subjects but it is quite frustrating

although, I find having my 540 on camera with it's af-assist beam helps alleviate the problem somewhat, but sometimes I just want the af-assist without the flash. Is there a way to set it to just have the AF beam, but no flash with either the 540 or 360?

If you press the "Mode" button, you'll cycle trough P-TTL, Auto, Manual and SB. SB is AF assist only
