k20d wireless flash

I know how to set it up with pentax p-ttl flashes but I do have a question for third party use (yes this is building on my previous thread)

I want to know if the k20d can trigger a radio slave like a pocket wizard without having a transmitter plugged into the x-sync port. I'm looking at renting some lighting stuff again after payday that has built in pocket wizards in the strobes so I'm curious if I will need to get the additional pocket wizard to use as a transmitter or not.

ps. Yes I know I would not get p-ttl functionality

Howdy!

I didn't catch your original thread, so my apologies if this response rehashes something said previously. I've been out of the PentaxForums loop for a bit.

Anyhoo, the K20D (nor any other SLR by any manufacturer that I am familiar with, which isn't saying a lot) does not have PW radio built in. Some higher-end pro cameras might have this as a feature, but someone else will have to speak to that.

So for the K20D and most any camera in its class, you need a PW attached to your camera. Most often this is on the camera's hotshoe, but you could hook it up to the X-Sync socket if you had another local flash on the hotshoe (in which case the camera will fire both the hotshoe flash and the PW at the same time).

Like you pointed out, some lighting systems (like Profoto) have built-in PW receivers on some models. You still need 1 PW as a transmitter on your camera.

Hope this was helpful, and apologies if I misunderstood the question.
