Is it a success?... The dish is about 1.75 feet away from me above left of camera.
I think it does give me edgily shadow, somewhat between softbox and just bare flash... but I am not sure as I have no softbox nor professional beauty dish.
P.S. It doesn't make me look any better so I guess it is a failure
For anyone that want to build one, I changed the design from using a convex mirror to a paper cone with aluminum foil, which increase the amount of light bounce to the dish instead of bonce back to the flash head.
The Paper Cone wrapped with foil, inside the 20-pack CD case, and the 15" pot saucer
Putting them together: (tip: The flash and the cone should NOT touch each other, I found if the cone is too close to the flash, it will less light output from the dish)
beauty dish looks interesting. what is the difference between this and using a shoot through umbrella though?
Beauty Dish suppose to give a focused light, a bit "punch" in the middle, which create a strong contrast difference on the subject, and since the light is focused it give you greater control on the light; instead of shoot through umbrella where it spill everywhere. Of course you can also add a grid to make the light even more directional and focus.
concentration on the important photo content, tapering into soft contours on the outside.

People tend to use it quite close to the subject like 2 to 5 feet, as it farther away from the subject it loss its characteristic.
I think it is easier to use for outdoor than umbrella too.
