DIY: Flash grid

I built this flash grid with straws, hot glue, a cereal box, Gaffers tape, elastic strap and velcro. This is pretty easy to build but it takes a little time.

You can build the same thing out of a corrugated box a little glue and a rubber band.

This is was designed for and mounted to a viv 285, no velcro applied to the flash. It fits the 360 good and should work just fine on any flash head smaller then the 285.

What results is this grid supposed to have on photos? Never saw anything like this before. Thanks.

Grids focus the beam coming from the flash into a tighter pattern. The density and depth of the honeycomb control how tight the "spot" becomes.

Say your flash normally projected a spread/pattern of 8ft on a wall when fired from 10ft away. With a grid attached, depending on the above, it might tighten that up to a shaft of light 2ft wide from the same distance. (example for sake of discussion only!)

They're great for isolating your subject or for adding hair/kicker light to add some depth to the shot.
