I am sure that most of you have noticed that I have been selling off my Pentax gear. Several people have asked me what is happening. Over the last couple of years I have made many friends on this forum, and I just feel the need to say goodbye. I am leaving the Pentax community, and switching to Nikon with the D300.
I have really debated whether I should write this post or not. At times this type of post can seem self serving and trollish. That is not the intent with this post, and I am truly sad about writing it.
As I am trying to build up a business that I can transition into when I retire from my day job in a few years, I need to look to my current, and future needs. Unfortunately, I don't see Pentax heading in the direction I feel I need to support that business. So, for the first time in 42 years, I will not be shooting with a Pentax in my hands.
I wish you all the best, and you should all know that this is, without a doubt, the best forum on the net. Adam has done a terrific job building and maintaining it, but it is all of you that make up the spirit of this community, and I shall miss that.
I have a few more things to sell, and will list them in the marketplace shortly, so I'll be around awhile longer.
May all your shots be in perfect focus, and your exposures just right.
All the best.
Sorry to see a fellow Virginian/Pentaxian go, but you have to do what you think is best, and I wish you the best in reaching your goal. I agree with you that this is without a doubt, the best forum on the web.

I feel for you. Your decision to go with Nikon is not without its merits. Over the past year I have pondered leaving Pentax too after thirty years of bliss. But I am optomistic that the next genration of Pentax cameras will fill the voids that their current line-up lacks.

No need to worry about it. Any of the regulars would surely understand the need to assess one's situation and move forward in a logical and reasoned manner.

While I have pondered D200 in the past and the D300 just this past week, I have to say that I certainly would miss the ergonomic handling of the Pentax's because the D300 was just a tad too boxy for me

I wish you the best too. May your retirment and expansion in photography be all you wish it to be.

As soon as Pentax improves their AF and metering... they will be.
We may be supports and fans but it really boils down to only being tools. If the tool doesn't do what you want or need it to do, then getting a new toll is the only logical choice.
Don't be a stranger. Selling the gear (I was wondering about this) doesn't revoke your membership on PF! It would be good to hear what you think of the new equipment.
Good luck in both your retirement and photography pursuits.
The encouraging sentiments you are getting is proof positive that the Pentax community is first-class. I do hope you find similar friends on the other side of the fence.
As someone who has benefited a bit from your switch I wish you the best your new business venture. I think a few people here have said that it's what you shoot and not what you shoot with that matters. All the best.
