Fastest way to upload pics

Is it faster to use a card reader to upload pictures or to use an usb cable linked to your camera?

i put my camera in through a USB port

2 gigs empty out in about 2 minutes

but thats a camera limitation, as my external HD's transfer much faster than that through the same USB openning.

I use an internal card reader...it's cleaner plus I don't take up an external USB port and have to find the cable all the time.

Also don't have to find a secure place to set the camera while it's doing its thing. Personal preference, but it's something to think about. Speeds are probably close, with the edge to a reader.

USB2 card reader is usually faster than the camera, and a firewire card reader is the fastest.

I usually use the USB cable because I leave it connected to the computer and just plug the camera in. Taking the card out involves more effort and time as I have to open a door on the PC to insert it. Transfer speed wise doesn't really concern me as I usually walk away and do something else if there are heaps of files to transfer.

If I have only one days shooting on the card (which is usually the case) I use a little program called 'transferrer' that copies the files to a new folder created for todays date under a folder I've specified (eg 2008). What I would like is a program that copies the files to folders created based on the dates the files were taken, which is what our Ricoh digicam does. If I've got multiple days I manually copy the folders to where I want them and rename since the Pentax naming system is unsortable! If anyone has a program that does this in one step, please enlighten me!

Cheers, Nige

You have such a program already - it's in your camera. In the menus, find the option where the camera will create a separate folder on the card by date. It will start at 100-xxxx and the next day will be 101-xxxx and so forth. That's how I set up my K10D.

got that invoked already, however it ain't a proper date (it's the year 2008 here!) and has to be renamed (so it's half the solution). Who thought of that scheme (using "1nn" for a suffix)... What does it achieve? Why not use the real date?

I believe K20 does, I have that function disabled.

You could probably write something to do the autorenaming/moving in Perl quite easily.
