Photography in NYC and cameras on planes

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be in NYC from Friday evening until late morning-noon time Sunday for my cousin's Bar Mitzvah. I was wondering what the United Airlines policy is for carrying SLRs with multiple lenses (DA 18-55 and Tamron 28-200 in my case) on in photo bags or backpacks. If this isn't allowed, does anyone know if it's safe to have a DLSR in a suitcase in the cargo bay?

Also, if I do end up being able to bring my camera, I'd like to know of good places (preferably not too cliché) in Manhattan to shoot. I'll have late Friday and Saturday nights, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning to spend some time shooting. By the way, please don't recommend going to B&H or Adorama, because my current broke state will make walking into a camera store of lenses that I can't buy total agony.

Thanks,
wmmk

from what I can tell there is no restriction on camera equipment. You'll still want to make sure that your bag isn't too big

Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, height and width added together).

Here's info on their web site

Do not, I repeat 'DO NOT' put 'anything' of value in your checked luggage. It will not be there when you get to your destination...

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess the laptop and camera bag will be carried on. I wonder if I could fit all of my stuff in a backpack small enough to be carried on...
