Would you jump ship if

With the release of Nikons D3s I was wondering how many pentaxians would jump ship if they were given, for free, a "higher level" camera from Canon or Nikon.

The D3 would make me mull over it a little, but I'd still keep both at least for a while to get my feet wet in another system. But I wouldn't jump ship - Pentax glass is what I'm keen on - still the best...

I haven't yet had the chance to acquire much pentax glass so if I suddenly got a new D3s with it's whopping 102,400 ISO...I might be tempted above that which I am able to resist. However, I'm rather keen on Pentax glass as well.

If only Pentax would compete in that segment. Man. That would be something.

However, Pentax currently serves my needs quite nicely.

I'd jump, rather quickly too, as then I'd have something to mount my Nikkors on!

I haven't really been paying attention to full frame prices but a few minutes of looking around the website of one of Canada's larger camera stores puts the bodies you've mentioned in the $3000 to $9000 CAD range before tax.

Without putting too much thought into it I'd say that I could get $1200 or so for my entire Pentax system if I priced it to sell, and that doesn't go very far with new Canon or Nikon FX glass (2 nice primes or 1 mid to high level zoom?).

The only crop lens I own is the kit 18-55, most of the rest of my gear is decent quality MF or AF primes. I have the range from 28 to 400mm fairly well covered with reasonably fast full frame lenses.

At no cost to me one of the full frame bodies would be tempting but I think I could make the money ($3k plus) go a whole lot further with one or two new Pentax lenses and $1500 set aside for whatever body replaces the K7. If Pentax ever does build a full frame camera I'm ready for it, and by that point I may even be able to afford it.

My second choice would probably be one of the Nikon bodies with a bunch of older MF glass, or possibly a Canon and Takumars with one or two newer lenses.

I would wait till canikon makes a camera that can hit ISO 2 million. Then use it to take nicely detailed (and noise free) pictures of black holes to sell to NASA.

Many of the pentax users have tried all systems. While there is merit for each of every camera system, Pentax has reasons for many loyal fans.

I have problems with Canikon systems where a lot of images from so called top of line lenses are simply flat.

In fact, you should include options of micro four thirds where many range finder lenses could be used with right adaptors. The sensor technology is nowadays good enough for many applications. However, sensor technology has yet focused on pixel quality about things that are not measurable.

I would use it for a while and then make my decision. I've seen all the hype but have never used the cameras. A Nikon D700 is larger and heavier than I want to carry around. I haven't seen the others except for pictures of them so I honestly can't choose any of the options.

I wouldn't jump ship.Pentax is slowly but surely coming up the rear of it's competitors,so the only way that I would acquire a D3 is if I had won one at the local raffle.

Kind of a big 'if.' I'd certainly consider it, depending how big a beast they really are. (I don't mind big bodies in general, prefer them, in fact, but there's a limit) Mostly I'd be interested in the high-ISO. If someone just handed me the thing and said, 'It's yours' I might sell it off and fill out the Pentax system I have: the price of one of those bodies would pretty much add up to all the Pentax stuff I'd want to have, (the big item proably being a 31) and I'm very content with what I've been using, so that'd be the best thing I could do.

Suppose I could use most of that money for other pressing needs in reality, (And it's not to say Nikon isn't making some nice stuff as always) but for the price of one of those bodies, my whole operation could be really stylin' with Pentax. Faster compy to work with included.

My K20D is a much better camera than I am a photographer.

I'd sell the free camera to any fool willing to sacrifice SR, good ergonomics, real WR. Then I'd buy a few limiteds or DA*.

I like Pentax for a many reasons, one being they are the underdog and I like not being part of the crowd, probably like most Pentax users. But I would change systems for something just as different, like a Panasonic GF1 with a few obscure lenses would be nice.

Isnt the highest priced on your list the D3s? I would get that one, sell it, then get a pen + 5dI and shave the mirror for my taks. The rest of the money for the limiteds.

I think I wouldn't jump ship for a non-IS sensor but maybe I'll get a D3s just to play with it and then sell it for a camera with an IS sensor
