This is the first good shot I have been able to get of one of these cool birds. I was driving along the road and saw one on a barn close to the road so I stopped and was able to take a few pictures before he got nervous.

Valley of the Gods is a scenic sandstone valley near Mexican Hat in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. It is north of Monument Valley across the San Juan River (Colorado River), and has similar rock formations. This is a smaller scale version of Monument Valley, with tall, red, isolated mesas and cliffs standing above the level valley floor, remnants of an ancient landscape.
The Valley of the Gods area may be toured via a 17 mile dirt road (FR 242) that winds amongst the eerie formations; this is rather steep and bumpy in parts but should be passable by normal vehicles in good weather. Here are a few photos from our last visit.

Pictures were taken with a z950 ps camera,I would like to use the Kr but am hesitant because of the enviroment.
Does anyone have anty suggestions on ways I could use a Kr in an enviroment where a lot of dust is present.
The z950 takes good pictures but doesnot have continuous shoot, that would be real handy when shooting at these events.
I can only get 1 picture about every 10 seconds, so its usally 1 shot of each run.

Bad AF selector switch?

Ok, I've got a weird issue with one of my K5s.

When I put certain lenses on the body, the camera sometimes freaks out a bit and doesn't recognize the AF. The "Choose Focal Length" screen comes on, and if I wiggle the lens a bit, the K5 realizes what lens it is, and gets back to normal.

1) At first I thought it was dirty contacts between the lens and body, but they are immaculate.

2) Then I thought it was the actual AF selector switch, but that works fine when I move it from AF-S to AF-C and MF.

3) Then I thought the lens drive shaft mechanism might have a loose connection somewhere that tells the camera it's an autofocus lens. When using a manual lens, the drive shaft doesn't fit in a lens driveshaft socket, and maybe the switch was bad as part of that mechanism. I then put a DA18-135 on the camera (which doesn't have a drive screw) and it did the same thing, as the DA18-135 is just a lens flange where the drive shaft is.

It also doesn't happen all the time. When it does, I can reproduce it easily.

Any ideas? Any one else?

Wanted: Pentax FA* 24mm f2 lens

I'm Interested in a Pentax FA* 24mm f2 lens.

Around $400 - $600 based on condition and if a lens hood is included.

I won't consider anything with optical or mechanical issues. I'll eventually want photos of the lens to see condition, and some current example images taken with it (preferably without post processing).

Thanks for your consideration. :)

Hello Folks,

Does the K-5 have an automatic exposure bracketing function? If so, what is it called, so I can look it up in the manual?

Thanks, Tom

Inspired by MSL (http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/185947-macro-bargain-basement-maco.html) to go ahead and share some of my early attempts at macro photography. Having a ton of fun experimenting! All of these were shot over the last few days using my K-r with a Vivitar 70-210mm f/4.5 that I got as part of a lot from goodwill. Also using some cheap used non-A extension tubes and sometimes a 2x TC behind it all. Also on board is an old Minolta flash for when things get dark. Makes for a loooooong heavy rig for sure but it costs maybe $50 tops for everything. Some were handheld and some on a tripod.

Thanks for looking!

I realized something quite annoying, with my kit DA 18-55 lens and K-x set on Av, depending on where I am focusing the aperture is not fully adjustable to the max and min stops that I know the lens is capable of. Sometimes it stops as low as f40, other times at f32, same thing with max. sometimes it is f4 others times only f5.6. Any explanation or way to make it fully adjustable?

A question about older Pentax lenses on a DSLR.

I recently bought a Pentax K2000. It is my first venture into the world of DSLR cameras. The camera came with two lenses, an 18-55mm and a 50-200mm.....as part of what I assume was a "kit." I have read enough of the owners manual to have a basic knowledge of how to use the camera (???). My question concerns how to use some of my older Pentax lenses, from back in my ME Super days, on this new digital camera body. I have a f/1.4-50mm SMC Asahi Pentax-M lens, a f/2.5-135mm Asahi Takumar lens and a f/4.5-80-200mm SMC Asahi Takumar-M lens. None of these three have the "A" setting on the aperture ring. I've read the owners manual concerning this, but I'm still not sure how to use them. It's my understanding that it's possible, but I need some guidance.

I also have several "third party" lenses that will fit the DSLR, but see no use in using them as they basically cover the same focal lengths of the Pentax lenses.

In the owner's manual, they speak of lenses as: DA, DA L, FA J, & D FA/FA/F/A. I'm totally confused as to this nomenclature. The owner's manual has 274 pages and it's a lot to absorb if you're as new to digital cameras as I am.

I *_DO_* know that on pg. 241 of the manual, they speak of an internal setting on the camera that allows the use of said lenses, but....I'm still somewhat confused. Can anyone offer any assistance?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

I just ordered a an old Vivitar Thyristor 3500 flash unit to help me with macro photography. It has just come to my attention that some old flash units can damage modern SLRs...

I have seen the trigger voltage on the vivitar reported to be anywhere between 7-9 volts. What is the official limit for the my k-r? Has anyone ever actually damaged the flash trigger and it it an expensive fix?

I find it funny that the non-photographer public mocks photographers for using big cameras, taking too long to take pictures, taking pictures of obscure subjects, paying attention to light, doing goofy things to get the right angle, etc while photographers mock regular people for boring subjects, sloppy snapshots, and using a phone for picture taking.

Photographers tend to work hard at exactly the type of photos that most people have no interest in. Most of us nailed the cat photo and sunset photos during our first year of learning to shoot, but as we continue to hone our technique and broaden our horizons, we diverge further and further from what the majority of the photo-viewing public cares about. Think about the shots that your (non-photographer) friends and family ooh and ahh over and compare those shots with the ones you post here or the ones that you are most proud of personally. I'm guessing there is a huge divide between the pictures you've taken that fall into those two categories.

The challenge, as I see it is to straddle that line and take images that can wow regular folk and at the same time offer up some depth to those that appreciate such things. I don't think I've accomplished that yet, but I'm still learning.

My Favorite Soup Recipes....

(Feel free to add your own....)

I'll start with my absolute favorite and add one now and again for you to enjoy....

When I was a kid working my first job and for many years after I used to stop into Denny's to grab their beef veggie soup and an order of FF for lunch. I'm a major soup fan all round so long as it's homemade not canned. Only canned soups I'll touch (and that's actually only for making certain time honored recipes of my Mom's like green bean casserole at Thanksgiving) are the Creamed Chicken and Tomato Bisque from Campbell's. (Not generics. I won't touch generics of these two, period.) Otherwise I make my own in batches and freeze it in individual serving cups. Since I was a kid I've loved that particular soup of Denny's though.

A few years ago they cut making it back to 2 days a week, then they also started routinely putting more water into their soups at Denny's. Between that and the news stories about the disturbing racial discrimination apparently going on inside some Denny's, well, I just finally decided that getting my favorite soup 2X a week just wasn't worth going there. But darn, I really missed my soup! So I resolved that I was going to break down that soup, figure out what they use in it and make my own version of it. You'd be surprised but it actually took me several years to finally get there. No, no recipes I found online even came close. This is my version, and actually it's even a bit better than Denny's I think, a bit more upscale, but it's WAY closer than any version I've ever seen.

You'll need a big pot for this one:

1/16 oz can beef broth, 1/16 oz can of all vegetable broth
8 oz can of crushed tomatoes (I use Pommi, the carton ones....)

a good veggie mix including corn, baby lima beans, green beans, carrots, and peas (Note: I don't use the cheap cubed versions for this. I like to use fresh, but any upscale version of this mix frozen would do you, and yes, it does matter. Tastes a whole heck better with good veggies! NO, it does not have anything like broccoli, cauliflower or asparagus in there. Or squash. Denny's doesn't, and besides which you put those in a veggie soup it tastes quite different! I can't stop you, but I definitely don't want to know about it if you do! ;P )

1 cup quick barley
1lb of ground beef cooked and drained (I use ground round actually....)
Fresh crushed garlic in olive oil, 1 tsp
About a tablespoon of chopped fresh onion (I usually put this and the garlic in with the meat as I brown the meat.)
Cracked pepper to taste
Kosher salt to taste
A pinch or two of thyme, rosemary and sage.

Brown the meat, garlic, onion put aside. Put the broth in the pot, add the crushed tomatoes and simmer to a low boil. Add the barley and the meat and simmer for about half an hour on low. Add the veggies, cook for about another half hour, again on a fairly low setting until the veggies are as soft as you generally like them. At that point you'd also add in the seasonings. The key to this soup is keeping it all on a low temperature and not overcooking the veggies. The half beef and half veggie broth plus the tomatoes makes for a nice flavor mix versus straight beef broth, though sometimes I do add a bit of water and some more beef flavoring as I finish it off to make it a bit more beefy. I use the "Better Than Bouillon" beef stuff at this point but you can just add another half a can of broth or two or 2 bouillon cubes.

Depends upon how much liquid the barley soaks up. Sometimes you don't need the additional liquid, sometimes you do. I always use the quick barley but each batch seems a bit different, shrug. If you want to get fancy a little squeeze of sun dried tomato paste added to the soup at the end makes for a nice extra bit of rich flavor though I doubt the folks at Denny's ever thought of that one. Lastly the ground beef versus say beef chunks is part of what makes this the Denny's style veggie soup. It will taste very different actually with beef chunks. No less good but the ground beef thing does give it a certain taste and texture that using beef chunks does not. Oh and don't use the regular barley if you can help it. Stuff takes hours to cook right, and sometimes never does. I never mess with that kind. It's way too much hassle.

Next up Minestrone (ala MK) with beef and ground Italian sausage or maybe my Yankee Bean and Ham soup, which isn't my Mama's tame version....

For Sale: Pentax K-7 body

*Item for Sale*
Pentax K-7 body

*Asking Price*
450 USD

*Item Location*
Portland (United States)

*Item Description*
I'm selling my trusty Pentax K-7 body as I've moved to a different system.

The body has approximately 11000 shutter actuations and is in great condition.

The original box, owner's manual, CD, battery charger, etc is included. I'll also include an extra, unused battery and a wireless remote. I'm missing the body cap, and the cable for the charger (though I can find one if you need one).

The reason the price is lower than market is because of one minor glitch I've noticed: When reviewing an image and zooming OUT (zooming in works fine), occasionally the magnification will skip. It works fine when the wheel is rotated slowly, but skips if the wheel is rotated quickly. It can be irritating, but you can always just hit the play button to get back to zero magnification, and in all other ways the camera works as expected.

A local sale would be great, but I can ship it within the US. Shipping cost will be calculated upon sale. Add 3% for paypal.

I am going to keep working on this photo. There's something interesting there to be extracted but it hasn't confronted me yet. This is my third approach to it in terms of colour and contrast and cropping. Perhaps it would be best printed and hung in a fairly large format. It could have some real impact then. Maybe it needs to be fully black and white. I also tried the opposite with some hyper-saturated colour. Maybe I missed it and at capture and should've gotten lower so the fence was in front of sky. Or maybe I need to just paint the scene instead. I'm looking to abstract it a bit. Anyhow, in progress...

Remembering Dye Transfer Color Printing

As the old timers die off, the legacy of the fabled dye transfer print in our digital age is disappearing. Many young photogs you talk with never heard of the process. Dye transfers were the ultimate color print up to the early 1990's when Kodak stopped making the materials for dye transfer work. As a remembrance to the fabled dye transfer print, I thought I'd add my 2 cents to this subject to at least memorialize a tidbit more information about it.

In the 1970's I was very fortunate to have worked for a short time with Bob Pace at Graphic Process Co in Hollywood CA. Bob was one of the top dye transfer men in the country. When he operated as Pace Color Labs in N.Y. he rolled out transfers for the top photographers of that time including Irving Penn and Yousuf Karsh. Bob relocated to the west coast and was the man to go to for high quality dye transfers. Bob was very generous with me with his time as well as even giving me materials for my own dye transfer experiments. Bob was always ready to help *anyone* interested in learning about the process.

To give you a short rundown on how the dye transfer process works, it can be summed up in this actual dye transfer print from 1948 salesmans catalog for U.S. Color Print in Portland, OR.

http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/vv219/keepitlow456/Color%20photography/img031-jpeglr.jpg

An original color chrome / slide would be turned into a color interneg. This would be color separated into 3 different color separations through reg, green and blue filters onto matrix film. The matrix film would be developed in a tanning developer which hardened the exposed portions of the matrix film. Any un and underexposed gelatin would wash off in warm water. The remaining emulsion would absorb dye in proportion to its density. The 3 color separations on matrix film were dyed magenta, yellow and cyan and rolled in pin registration onto a final support paper. The paper absorbed the dye due to an imbalance in PH and after the last matrix was removed the dye transfer was ready to be dried.

That is a simplified version of it. An expert may be able to produce a fine dye transfer in 8 hours. But if shadow and highlight masks or friskets need to be made, it took a lot longer. The actual rolling out of the print from dyed matrices took only 20 min or less.

The beauty of dye transfer was a fresh set of color prints could be rolled off at any time from archival processed matrix separations. But the inherent permanency of the dyes Kodak used seldom made this necessary. In its heyday, dye transfer prints were the only color print a museum would accept in their collection. But since its demise, Type C, Cibacrhomes and Ink Jet prints are what museums are collecting now.

Chromogentic / Type C print from the collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Let me talk a little about these various printing media I mentioned before continuing with the dye transfer process.

Type C or Chromogenic printing is the standard wet developed color print we have all known since the late 1940's. In the early days the dyes were not very stable. But the makers have improved a lot in that dept. The problem with Type C was that many pros shot in chromes or slide film and a color interneg had to be produced to make the C print. This removed the actual image a generation away from the original. In the 1970's Agfacolor printing paper was an excellent paper for beautifully rendered color . The problem with Agfacolor was it faded quickly.

As an alternative to Type C, Ciba came out with Cibachrome. Cibachromes could be made from chrome / slides direct and did not need a color interneg made.

Ilfochrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilfochrome)

I remember Graphic Process having a display of giant Cibachrome in the front window. Direct CA sunlight was blasting away at them all day. The Cibachromes developed a craquelure to the base...but the colors never faded. The bad thing about the Ciba was the plastic look of the base material. They also left a lot to be desired in the area of print control that masking offered with the dye transfers. Cibachromes tended to look like hell after they were handled some. Color wise it is very good. And fade resistance it is excellent. But the shiny plastic surface ruined it. If it was type F surface they would have had a winner.

Cibachromes reminded me of a shiny black Cadillac. It looks great the first day out of the showroom...and it is all downhill from there. Just like the black car, the super shiny Ciba shows all defects, scratches, fingerprints, dust. In the end, Cibachromes could not compare to dye transfers when it came to making a beautiful, traditional print.

Here is a sample Cibachrome print showing some handling wear and tear.

http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/vv219/keepitlow456/Color%20photography/ciba4.jpg

In our modern day we do have a replacement to the dye transfer print. It is actually a dye transfer print made by machine...the ink jet print. Ink jet printing is capable of producing very high quality prints with excellent dye permanence and anti fading characteristics. Here is a a sample 4 x 5 ink jet print made with a 5 color inexpensive ink jet printer from Walmart.

I'll leave you with some samples of dye transfers from the late 1940's and early 1950's that were just scanned. They have been stored in normal conditions with contact to acid containing boards. No signs of fading I can see. Prints were made by Dean Child and a company he owned called 'U.S Color Print' in Portland OR.

Lots of great info there including Bob Pace bulletins archived as well as videos of Bob going through the dye transfer process. If your short on time, just watch the segment showing Bob rolling out a print.

Lots of great info there including Bob Pace bulletins archived as well as videos of Bob going through the dye transfer process. If your short on time, just watch the segment showing Bob rolling out a print.

First solid K 30 rumors

* Radical new design, with some hints of the K-5
* 16MP sensor (inherited from the K-5)
* ISO 25600
* 4 fps burst shooting
* Full HD video recording
* 3-inch LCD
* Weather-sealed
* Dual control dials, RAW/Fx button, AF.S/C/MF switch (retaining much of the controls of the K-5; not clear if top-plate LCD is present)
* Dual power system (inherited from the K-r)
* €799 with DA 18-55mm WR lens

Looks great, but the 4 fps figure is a bit of a concern to me. Opinions?

Pentax K30: New Intro-Level DSLR - Pentax Camera News & Rumors - PentaxForums.com (http://www.pentaxforums.com/news/pentax-k30-new-intro-level-dslr.html)

Back in January I reported that the upcoming Pentax K-r replacement will be called K-30. The above picture of the upcoming Pentax K-30 DSLR camera was taken from a French catalog.

From the picture I can spot the following Pentax K-30 specs:

    16MP sensor
    Max ISO: 25,600
    Full HD video
    Weather sealed
Price: 799 EUR (around 1,000 USD)

--------------------------------

Looks awesomely good and "tough"!!!

*Bonjour,
*
As promised earlier and possibly elsewhere on PF, here's a French photo mag review of the K-01. Only three stars out of five possible, thus kind of a mediocre result where IMHO points were lost because the large size/ergonomics, no OVF + a sub-par screen and high price point.

Below are the four pages of the review of the May 2012 issue of *Chassuer d'Image*, and to quote the "speed" summary:

"_What pleases_
° IQ: 16 Mpix sensor and well exploited by Pentax
° Confort: Easy utilisation of Pentax

_What displeases_
° Large size: an ensemble heavy and rather massive
° Viewfinder: no OVF, and non-movable screen which is dull in daylight
° Price: sold at the price of a K-5 which is much more practical and efficient. "

They liked the DA 40/2.8 XS, but criticized the K-01 body volume size ... comparing it with a Samsung NX200 which is half as thick, as the pictured on page 1 of this review.

*Voilą,* for what it's worth ...

I have decided to clear out my Pentax kit and move on. The lens is essentially brand new as it was purchased in April 2012. The condition guides would have it as mint for listing. It has been used on just a couple of occasions and works flawlessly.

I am listing at $1,400 shipped in the US, but I will ship to Canada or UK for a quoted rate. I will include the B+W UV filter I have for the lens. And all of the packaging, paperwork, caps, and pouch are there as well.

I has this listed under this marketplace listing: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/sold-items/186094-sale-sold-reduced-k5-da-15mm-da-60-250mm-fa-31mm-fa-77mm.html
But I accidentally closed it when I hit the "sold" button on the side.

Thanks,

Dan

I have been having an odd issue with my fairly new k-5 (bought from b&h in April with build date of 01-12-2012)
Lately when I turn the power on to the camera and the camera starts up the rear LCD screen is garbled. If I then turn the power off and then back on it is okay. I did not have this issue until I activated. DNG for my RAW format. I have since gone back to. PEF and I am waiting to see if it happens again. It only seems to occur if the camera is off for a couple of days and I first start it up.
Has anyone else experienced this?

New Color Styler Plugin..

Has anyone tried the new Color Styler Plugin from thepluginsite? It is similar in function as its cousin B/W Styler plugin. After I purchased Focal Blade years ago, I got the whole Photowiz set last year for I think $200. I am happy with my latest addition for easily creating various color effects. I am finding so many plugins so pricey these days, and are too fancy and automated.

I have my favorite plugins/programs that give me many options to tweak and customize looks of my photos. Photowiz plugins, Fhotoroom HDR and (I hate to admit this last one...) Protrait Professional does that for me. I also got star effects and lens effects from topaz, though I don't like their denoise plugin, so for that I have Noise Ninja.

Anyway, I am just sharing my favorite plugins/programs.

FS: Pentax 645 80-160/4.5 FA zoom. Light scratches at top of barrel where cap, filters mounted. There is a small ding on the rim of the barrel, that is large enough to prevent seating of filters. Lens is very sharp and handles well for its mass.
AF is efficient, manual focusing is smooth. Glass is clean inside and out. I have sold all of my 645D gear except this lens. Price is reduced to $595.00 because of the filter seating problem. Price includes PayPal and CONUS shipping.
I have been using the lens with my Canon 40D...lens becomes a 120-240 with the crop factor...very sharp, contrasty images. 645 - EOS adapter is available .
