Howdy y'all.
I woke up one morning after a night of taking pictures about the city and noticed that the winder knob was missing. It came unscrewed all the time and after a thorough search, I've declared it permanently missing.
My question is if a k1000 (which i've been looking to buy anyway) winder knob is interchangeable with the ME's. If not, anyone got any tips on how to rewind my film and pop open the back, short of buying another ME Super?

thanks.

Hi British Pentaxians,

I am seriously looking for a Pentax Medium Format system, but haven't decided yet for 645 or 67 system (most likely an old 6x7 with MLU) Prices for used equipment are generally quite high in France, so I'm looking to buy abroad.

I just found this site that has hudge choice of Medium format (and K-mount) equipments : https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm Does anybody have had buying experience with them ?

Do you know if they would accept international shipping ?

Best regards,

A thread in DPR is discussing this issue, and I thought I would post it here to pressure PPG into taking action.

A talented photographer 'Martin Zalba' had posted an image on a forum as being taken by a canon. La casa que me quita el...: Photo by Photographer Martin Zalba Ibaņez - photo.net

Then the same image appears in PPG as being taken by a Pentax

PENTAX Photo Gallery

Also, the same poster has this image with a 988 sec exposure with no star trail, and something is obviously wrong there.

PENTAX Photo Gallery

Martin initially responded to the thread and said he didn't understand the issue, and when the discrepancy was explained to him he decided to disappear, further raising the suspicion of something sinister.

The poster contacted PPG and they are ignoring it. I think the whole point of PPG is that the images has to be taken by a Pentax. What is the point in us telling newbies, considering a Pentax purchase, to check the PPG gallery, like I often do, when the images could be from any camera?

I think the PPG's entire reputation is smeared with things like this......does anyone else also feel strongly about this?

This may have been asked here already but after going through the first umpteen pages of a couple other PPG threads I gave up searching.

What does it mean if your submissions are declined immediately?

I was careful to read the rules and guidelines and I tried to upload the full 10 images allowed, 600 pix H, no PS hanky panky, EXIF data intact, no objectionable subject matter, no frames or signatures, no copyright (other than what might show up in the metadata, but no watermark or such).

3 or 4 of the shots were with a Sigma lens, the rest were pentax. 3 or 4 of the shots were HDR but they have a category in the gallery for HDR so I don't think that was it. But I doubt anybody live would have even had time to look at them that quickly so I gotta think it was the "bot". Either they are just bombarded with uploads and have their "filter" set to reject any yahoo like me who signs up and uploads the max 10 right off the hop in the same day, or there was some infraction in my submissions that I missed. Any ideas?

The difference is even greater than with the K-7 when looking at more expensive cameras like Nikon D300s or D700.

What's the catch?
Are they planning on selling millions of units just over their cost? Or are there some darker problems in dealing with these vendors?

I just wanted to share some thoughts about a few aspects of my life this month. Inspired by more than a few members on the forum and some personal inspirations I continue to find much joy in this hobby called photography and I would like to talk about some recent motivations.

To start with, I had decided to not spend more money on camera equipment so that we might give to charities more this year. See, I sort of got the idea that perhaps I could do without some comforts this holiday and winter season so that maybe someone else could be a little less uncomfortable. I would instead look to what I have instead of the expectations of what else I might like to have. Use some of the lenses that do not get use often and in conjunction with motivations from a few Pentax Forums members and threads like "Off Brand Lens Club" and cheap zoom lens challenges, that is what I set out to do until spring.

Now for the past year I carried my camera bag with me nearly everywhere I went but instead of packing a few nice, somewhat fast and shiny lenses of remarkable reputation, I would substitute more slow, dimwitted and clumsy lenses of questionably reputation. And as some of you may have noticed, I have long been a pretty low budget photography hobbyist.

I started out rediscovering an old, neglected manual Sun Optics 85-210mm f4.8 lens. I often do take what others will call "snapshots", recording the parts of life that we look back on when we are old. And I would use the Sun lens to take snapshots and even compose more interesting scenes with it with satisfying results.

I was contacted by someone who had asked me about taking pictures of their daughter who would be graduating from high school this year. A friend of my wife had called to ask if I would take senior photos of her daughter and we had some fun with that session. I selected what I thought was a suitable area with a few great scenes and we spent some time taking the photos and talking and then in a few days I presented them with the edited files for them to print a collection for the senior photos. But on the way to that outdoors photo session, I spotted a couple of scenes that I wanted for my own, made mental notes and then that night set the alarm to get up early.

Unhindered by children or wife I woke up early that next day with thoughts partially inspired by forum members. My wife travels for business often but on this morning I had both motivation and opportunity in my favor. The kids were at grandmas so I could let the wife sleep and go out and do my thing for a little while, this time using a Pentax FA 28-90mm from my auto focus film days.

Another day I returned to using the Sun 85-210 and playing with the 28-90 in reverse mounting. I play roller hockey often as well and lately there have been a few more goaltenders showing up to play. I don't really like sitting out for too long while others are playing so the last time, I put some camera gear in the car to bring with me incase there would be need for goaltender rotations. If I was not going to have someone taking shots at me then I was going to set up some flashes and try to get some interesting images. Either play and have people take some shots from a stick and puck or stand on the side and get some shots with a camera and lens. But that time only two goalies showed up so I played those two hours and did not take any pictures.

On another day of driving, I came across a scene that was about to unfold. Or at least in my mind's eye I could imagine how a scene was about to unfold. Of course I had my camera in the car but I also had my two children and had their safety to think about. Not to mention the verbal brow beating I would receive from my wife, or so I imagined, if she knew what I was about to do along side of the road with our kids in the car just so I could get a picture of some birds flying over cows in a field. So that was kind of another opportunity I had to pass up.

Then there was motivation to use my Sigma mini-zoom macro and the Sun lens again. Even a Pentax F 35-80mm that has rarely even seen my K10. With most of the lenses I was really having fun and feeling a little smug like I was really being cool and creative with lenses that are commonly overlooked and useless in someone's opinions. And getting satisfying results. My limited photographic skills seemed to be broadening or at least a little less restricted while becoming more interesting, hopefully.

An informal family dinner at the T-Rex Cafe and a chance to play with the cheap 28-90mm zoom. I broke out the slow and clumsy Five Star 500mm for an hour or two around the backyard. Playing in the park I took along one of my favorite manual focus zoom lenses which still remains to be positively identified again with more satisfying results and I found myself starting to sort through hundreds of images to upload and share on places like flickr, Facebook and this forum.

The home opener of our area's newest professional hockey team was very recently. Very exciting for me so I called the venue and was told that "no professional cameras of any kind will be allowed in the building". Since I would be attending the game with many family and friends I thought it best to just concentrate on that rather than inquire about a limited access photo pass or try to smuggle in my K10 and divide my time between taking a boatload of pictures and the overall experience.

One morning we went with family to see the circus. In the past, our choice of seats was not that good and I was fearing the disdain of my wife because I bring my camera everywhere I go. I would just use her point and shoot for the occasional high points of the family's night at the circus. But when we got there and I had an understanding of where our seats would be this time I began kicking myself for not bringing my camera. And in fact as we were walking to our seats I said aloud, "Now I really regret not bringing my camera"

"Well why didn't you bring your camera?" was my wife's innocent reply. (smacks himself in the forehead - I could have had a K10!)

So those are my winnings and loosing for the month so far. A few checks in both columns. A few missed opportunities and a some satisfying success. As I sit back now and upload more images to photo sharing sites and think about sharing some here I would say it has been a good November for me so far with it's own high points and low points. You win some. You loose some.

Thanks for reading. I am sure many of you can relate these to your own experiences; I just wanted to share a little.

I want to buy a camera for my 2.5 year granddaughter for xmas. She can already use my wifes Canon a710IS to some degree. I have looked at the Fisher Price and V-Tech cameras designed for this age group and want some input on what product to buy her. Obviously for this age group optical and picture quality is not of any concern, just build quality and ability for a young child to easily use it. I want to encourage her to enjoy photography and start her off early. I am sure some of you have had the same thoughts.

I understand the appeal of large LCD's, but a camera without a viewfinder seems crippled to me. You can't see the LCD in bright sun, you can't possibly hold the camera steady at arms length in low light, even with anti-shake. Now they are even coming out with interchangeable lens cameras with no viewfinder. It is hard to find a small p&s camera now with a viewfinder. All they are good for is bright sun (faster shutter to freeze movement) or with flash under 9 feet for the same reason. Back to box cameras?

I'm based in Australia and I bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my pentax k200d from Adorama. It's been about 3 days since I received it. I only realized today that there is a loose aperture blade! I did not drop it at all and it has been taken good care of the 3 days I had it.

When I move the lens around the blade will 'drop out' and sometimes when i take photos the blade does not move all the way back into position, like a normal blade would.

Here is a photo of it. http://i38.tinypic.com/24dmrk9.jpg

I have e-mailed Adorama and currently awaiting their response. What should they do?

So now that I know I need glasses for things close up, do others in the same boat shoot with your glasses on, or do you just adjust the diopawhatitsthingy on the viewfinder?

Greetings,

I have been trying to access the Pentax Digiichi workshops (http://digiichi.pentax.jp/english/) since I first read about Pentax Digiichi tutorials for a few day now. But I keep getting the browser message, " server took too long to respond". This happens whether I use Firefox or IE8.
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? I have never visited the site. Could the server be down? Does any know if the site is working?

Thanks

Hi everybody, I have a Spotmatic 2 I bought in the late 60's, and about 25 years ago, I came across a lens for it. I no longer use the Spotmatic, but I was wondering if the lens had any value. It's a Carl Zeiss, aluminum body, says Triotar 4/135 on the front. It's the only lens I ever saw that the aperture wasn't stepped, but smooth. Thanks in advance for any help!
