I was (and still am) a bit confused with the choise of lenses. So what I did is this: I bought some cheap lenses of other brands than pentax on e-bay and I had a go. Up to now the rikenon p zoom 35-70 is the one I like best. I also have a 55 lens and a 70-200.

Hey folks,

My wife and I have got ourselves a K-x as the first step into a brave new world of SLR cameras.

I had been experimenting more and more with my old compact (a Sony DSC35), then killed it at the beach at the start of the year... (sand in the lens mechanism :( ).

I toyed with a dSLR then, but found it a bit overwhelming, and got another Sony - last weekend though, we took the plunge and picked up the K-x...

and spent the entire weekend going nuts - taking pics of everything that moved (and didn't).

Looking forward to learning more about 'proper' photography, and this seems like just the place.

That’s right – Lens Research Addiction. I’ve got it. It’s WAY cheaper than LBA though… It’s fun to read about everyone’s experience in the various lens “clubs”. Heck – Marc Sabatella even already convinced me to get a mirror lense!

So I decided to join because I’m fairly sure I will get back “into” photography by getting the new K-x. I want to be able to ask questions, and maybe buy some lenses on the “marketplace”.

I am not new to SLR photography, but I never have had a digital one. I learned photography on a fully manual Canon FTb with some nice 50mm and 200mm primes. (I actually know what f-stop means… :p) I always wanted to “go big” since most of the work I admired was landscape shots done with large format cameras. I never felt I could really capture what they did with a 35mm. Since then, digital came on the scene and I have experience with several compact models. They don’t seem as good for “art” in general – but they are feature packed and fun! I am sort of a resolution freak and am always zooming in to see the details captured… As recently as a couple years ago I was on the verge of getting into medium format film on the cheap by getting a twin lens reflex – I figured if I ever wanted to print anything at “poster” size, that would be the way to go for the least expense. But I never did it… So I kept watching the progression of digital technology and have been getting excited about all the great new stuff. The lines are blurring from DSLR to point-n-shoot models with the new micro 4/3 systems – but they are still really new and expensive!

I read several reviews at Cameralabs and DPreview and learned a lot about why the SLRs produce ‘better’ images even with a lower pixel count (noise). I waivered a lot between the premium compact models and the low end DSLRs – knowing that the noise was better in SLRs, but the resolution was better in most compacts for less money. I was very close to getting a Canon G9 (and would still like to have one…). I also like the fun features of the compacts, such as video and the ability to compose on the LCD. Oh, and the macro capabilities of even cheapo point-n-shoot cameras is awesome…

And then I learned about the K-x. Truth be told, if it were another $900 DSLR, I wouldn’t have given it as much thought… But the low starting price combined with many of the fun features I like in compacts got my attention. So I started reading – and have pretty much decided I would like to “jump in” with this model. Here’s why:

- It’s relatively inexpensive.
- It has HD video. (Not a primary use, but why not?)
- It’s relatively small for a DSLR? I think so…
- It has “fun” tweaking options like color isolation (which I like in the Canon cameras)
- It can easily use 30 year old lenses! That is so cool. Apparently this is easier in the Pentax line than in some others – although I know some backward compatibility is provided by the other guys too.
- It has some kind of new magical voodoo supernatural sensor that attracts photons like a black hole! The reportedly excellent high ISO performance means I don’t need or have to seek out all those horribly expensive “fast” lenses! That is nice!
- I have the possibility to find cheap lenses at garage sales!
- It comes in cool, fun colors! Although unfortunately I’ll probably end up with black since I don’t want to pay extra… :(

So, even though I have not purchased it yet, I’m excitedly researching lenses! It will probably be months before I post any photos to share, but I am looking forward to it. Now, off I go to read about some other no-name 28mm lens that might be a hidden gem! LRA…

Hello from me (Mark) in Kern County California. Talk to many of you soon!

New member just saying "Hi!!"

Photography been a hobby of mine for quite a while but I've kinda ignored it for a few years. I recently decided that I want to take it more seriously again and also decided that it's time to bite the bullet and get a new SLR. I've been shooting digital for many years now but never had the $$ for an SLR.

After a lot of research I decided to go Pentax. I've had Pentax 35mm film cameras in the past (including a really old Honeywell/Pentax Spotmatic). I've also owned Nikon and Minolta 35mm film SLRs and Olympus and Nikon digital P&S cameras.

Well today I pulled the trigger on a brand new Pentax K-x with the 18-55mm lens.

Looking forward to participating here in the forums including some of the photo challenges!

Hello everyone I'm John and new to this forum. Iapologize if I am crashing a current thread, however I have a question for anyone who,s will to listen. A brief history of my photograhpic experience is required. I have a BFA degree in fine arts photography empahsis in documentary photography. I perted with an nikon FM and purchased a leica M series body (no meter) and a 50 f/2 and never looked back when I entered college. A year ago I entered the digital era literally kicking and screaming leaving my darkroom behind and purchased an Oly E3 and a 400 f6.8 leitz Telyt to photograph wildlife. To my desmay the the E3 and novoflex R to 4/3's adapter and my 400 would not focus. I spent an afternoon photographing along the 'river" only to discouver nothing was in proper focus. I have sent the lens to be CLA'd and will try again when it returns. If still will not focus the big lens I may sell the E3 and convert to Pentax due to It's ability to accept 3rd party lenses, rugged and moisture resistant protection. I also own a 24 Takumar, mint, M42 that I would dearly love to put to use as I understand it is a fine old lens. Does anyone have an opinion regarding which Pentax body I should consider and why? I like the feel of the K20D what advantage would the K7 provide?

Kindest Regards
John

Hi
I’ve followed this forum for nearly 2 years but have never contributed or indeed registered.
Over the last few months I have been searching for a Voiglander 180mm Apo Lanthar.
They are obviously scarce and the few I’ve seen for sale were invariably not Pentax fit.
Looking through the for sale section of this forum on Saturday I at last found what I had been looking for
I immediately emailed the seller --knyghtfall - to check if the item was still available and check the shipping cost to the UK.
Apparently it was available so I immediately arranged a Paypal transaction for the correct amount.
Then things went wrong. I received an email from Paypal as expected but it stated that the transaction had been initiated.
Nothing further happened and I received an email from the seller asking if I was still interested in the lens as he had other enquiries and his paypal account had not registered a payment where as my account stated that the amount had not been claimed.
He suggested the he sent me a Paypal request for funds and so I cancelled my original payment attempt
On receiving the promised invoice I paid the required amount and it was processed normally and hopefully I will soon receive the lens I’ve been wanting.
I’ve never had this problem with Paypal before and wonder just what had gone wrong.
Anyway the reason for this post is to thank knyghtfalll for being so patient and allowing me time to sort the payment problem I’m sure he could have sold the Apo many times over.
I would have posted this in his feedback but the original post seems to have disappeared
I hope its OK to post in this section.
So once again thank you knyghtfall
I am fairly new to pentax, and DSLRs for that matter. I love my k10d, and sometimes ponder buying a k-7... but I save my for lenses, accessories and other exciting things.

I'm an avid hiker and cyclist and my pictures tend to reflect this. Architecture is kinda my wife's gig, so I have developed an interest in these shots as well.

I am excited to be a part of this community.

Hi everybody, I am glad to be here, what a wealth of info and knowledgeable people.

My first SLR/DSLR was Nikon D40 that I purchased in '07. I used it to take thousands of memorable photos (coupled w/ the kit 18-55mm and the 35mm f/1.8 prime). I invested no more $ into it but I'm still keeping it as a simple and reliable pick-it-up.

My dad used to own a Minolta SLR as well as a nice Pentax prosumer cam. I enjoyed using both very much on family vacations and that is the reason why Pentax crossed my mind when I shopped for a mid-range DSLR.

I ended up w/ Pentax K20D, BG2 grip, FA 50mm f/1.4 Prime, and DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3.

This is all within the past month and I'm waiting for DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 Fisheye and AF 360 FGZ flash unit to arrive.

I've taken 1K+ photos w/ K20D at various locations and it's been a joy to use. I took it out last night around 4:30am to try to capture the Leonid meteor but unfortunately it was cloudy.

Hi,
I live in Cottage country of Ontario, Canada, Retired and always busy. I have some varied interests besides Photography. Generally you will find Sue & I sailing "Lady Simcoe" we live aboard for 2 years on our first cruise of the Carabbean then again last winer in the Bahamas. :ugh: When not sailing in the winer we are found on the Curling Rink where we throw big pieces of granet down a sheet of Ice where a couple of people sweep with a push broom ahead of the rock. It's a great roaring game. During the summer if not on the lake sailing we are touring around in our Alfa Romeo Sports cars. I got into the Pentax feaver years ago and then switched to digital. Pentax was the only system to retain their old lenses on there digital cameras thanks. I presently shoot with a 1stDS and will up grade to a K7 soon. When the price drops tor around a 1000 dollars I will probably have one. Got to get Sue's ok. Any way owning a Pentax is like owning an Alfa Romeo Sports car. They are not very well known but are the best.
Love to here from some Pentexicians from around the world. Would post some pic's but can't figure out what a URL is, maybe some one can explain how to attach pictures.
All for know.

I've been lurking here for a few times in the last month, because I've recently bought a Pentax K200D and today the Sigma EF-530 DG ST external flash. I've decided to register because from what I've seen this is a good resource for information about Pentax. I'm not new to photography, I've been taking photos for about 9 years now as a hobby, but I'm new to DSLR's and Pentax is my first one. My previous camera (I still have it) was a HP 945, which was and still is a great camera but with it's limitations. I have over 20 000 photos taken with so you could guess it accompanied me in almost all of my trips, especially in the mountains.

By buying the Pentax I am looking to evolve in this field of photography and maybe make some money out of it, if I get the chance. Thank all of you for all the information you posted in this forum and I hope I will be able to contribute myself here and help other people passionate of photography.
