Canon S90: Should Pentax Take Note?

About a month ago I bought a Canon S90 P&S. I would have liked to buy Pentax, but our guys don't make this type of advanced P&S. Ned Bunnell went with a Leica D-Lux 4, but I suppose his salary is bigger than mine as I could only afford the S90

But seriously, do you guys think Pentax should be trying to get a foothold in the advanced P&S market? The S90 is selling like crazy and will surely give Canon a tidy profit, but would it have sold just as well if the logo had said Pentax instead of Canon?

I am writing a 3-part review of the S90—you can already read Part 1 and Part 2. While the camera is very good, both in handling and IQ, there are still many improvements that could be made. Canon is notorious for not listening to the complaints its users have (which is why they still include a quick-print button in some of their high-tier DSLRs), so if some company were to look at the strengths of the Canon S90 (and Panasonic LX3) and build upon that using the feedback from its users, they could produce the definitive P&S for the advanced photographer. Maybe I should trademark that catchphrase... ;)

Thoughts and opinions?

It seems like Pentax's P&S range is just an afterthought, and apart from the waterproof series, there aren't any cameras that look like any serious thought was put into them. I believe that as technology advances, small sensors are going to get much better, and small P&S cameras are going to become viable tools in the creation of serious photographs. The S90 and LX3 are already there. Who's going to be next?

.

Hello.

I own an Optio S4i. I've had it for a few years now. I can't find any information on what the maximum capacity of memory card the camera can accommodate.

It appears to be 1GB. If I put a 2GB card in it and format it, it appears as a 1GB card (I can check in another camera, and it shows up as a 1GB volume on my computer).

If I format it in another camera as a 2GB card, the S4i indicates double the (approximate) amount of pictures available, but as I reach about the half-way point of that estimate, the camera reports a memory card error.

So, either the model has a (not well-documented) 1GB limit, or my camera has a problem.

Does anybody know what the limit is?

Thanks.

Well, here we go with P&S contest #25.

Rules of entry

1. Remember to have FUN!
2. Any camera other than a SLR/DSLR, Range finder, MF or LF is eligible.
3. Entries will end on Monday November 30th 18 00 GMT.
4. Maximum image dimensions are 800 X 800 pixels.
5. List camera BRAND, MODEL with entry for all to see.
6. The theme is "Signs of religion"
7. Maximum of 3 photos per photographer.
8. Post processing is fine.
9. Winner will set up and judge next contest.

About the theme:
Again, I think this could be quite interesting seeing how many different nationalities we've got on the forum.
I know we sometimes would like to think we are all the same but in fact, we all have our own cultures. And that's just great. We should try to keep an open mind and embrace our differences.
In most cultures, religion is an integrate part of it, rooted very deeply in history. So, show me the signs of religion you encounter in your part of the world - or in a part of the world you visited.
Could be a shrine, a mosque, a temple, a church, a statue, a procession, ... And of course, people practicing their religion is a bonus, I would think.

Please, do mention where your pictures are from!

A note about the rules: we have had some discussions about the cameras to use. Up till now, the rules stated that anything but a SLR or DSLR was allowed. This strikes me and others as strange in a contest named "Point & Shoot contest". So, there was a difference between the spirit and the letter of the rules.
I did make a change, trying to bring clarity to this matter. We don't want a M9 or later on a 645D to enter the P&S contest, now do we.

Good luck to all and do have fun.

Winners: Point & Shoot Contest #24 - "The Best View From My Place"

Thanks to all of you who made an effort entering / participating in the Point & Shoot Contest and I hope that you will continue to particpate. Its a tough one having to pick the winner since there were lots of very good entries and I really have a rough time deciding and picking the winners.

So here it is:

two 3rd place winners:
Jheu02
Nags Head, NC - Sunset
I like the mix colors of the clouds (blue and red clouds) ist being reflected by the sunset and 2nd color (its original color). Together with the silhouettes of the houses.

and
Taipei, Taiwan
The view and the composition was great. being able to capture the sky, the buildings and skyway.

My daughter bought an Optio W80. I am an experienced user of Canon equipment and we compared this against the D10 and she went for the Pentax based on the features and stats she saw.

The test pictures that she has taken are less than stellar. They are overly noisey/grainy for what they should be in comparison to my Canon G10 or even my lowly A620. On some of the flash shots she is getting spots that I can only equate what it looks like when you use the flash on falling snow. I have tried it on a number of different settings, flash, no flash, indoors, outdoors, different modes, different ISO levels all with the same results. When I look at the shots at 100% they are softer than what I would expect.
