Small and compact case/bag for *ist DS + 40mm pancake

Just got my used *ist DS that and 40/2.8 combo. The idea is to have this with me in my backpack at all times. I am a little scared of just throwing it in the bag with all the other stuff in it, and would ideally like to have a small padded case that holds this combo. I currently have a Lowepro TLZ mini, but this is HUGE for this camera/lens setup.

I am positive I would not want to carry any other lens with this, so I want something with little or no extra room. Any recommendations on an inexpensive padded case for this? Maybe an oversized P&S case?

I'm thinking a Crumpler 3 Million Dollar home would fit it without to many troubles. I have a 4 million dollar home, and it hold my DS with a tamron 75-300 attached and the kit lens tossed on the other side of the divider. Very nicely constructed bags.

Thanks Pooky, but that appears too large for the camera with the pancake. Even the 2 million dollar home might be a little too large. From looking at the dimensions, the 1 million dollar home might be too small

I measured the camera with lens, and it is approx 5in x 3.5in x 3.5in. I can't find a bag with internal dimensions close to this. Most P&S pouches are too thin in the depth (max ~2.9in). Most SLR cases are too tall to allow for a zoom lens (~5in).

The Lowepro Cirrus TLZ5 is pretty close to the dimensions you need. Have a look at it:

Lowepro - Cirrus TLZ 5 - Lowepro eCommerce

Or perhaps the Tamrac 3320 (Aero Zoom 20) here:

Tamrac - Model 3320 Aero Zoom 20

I do not own any of them though, I was just browsing for camera cases to find the right one for my needs.

Good luck finding yours.

*istDS+40mm Pancake is great, indeed. I actually put mine in a trouser pocket. It's intended to be worn no other way

Also, it's a good surprise for people who brought their c***n and n***n back packs

Sanyi,

Thanks! The lowepro you mention is also what I was thinking of. I am a bit concerned about the 4.5" long side (the *ist DS measures a tad under 5"). But I think there might be some wiggle-room in the case. The tamrac is one I had not looked at before. It is slightly bigger than what I need, but might be the best option.

The other thing I could do is simply wrap the camera in a double layered towel or something. Since this will always be in my backpack, I really don't need a "bag". Just some padded protection.

Something simple and cheap...how about a sock?
Seriously--if you have a sock that's missing a mate, why not put it to good use?

LOL, Heather. That is actually an excellent suggestion. An thick over-sized sock might do the trick! Maybe I should go to Walmart instead of Ritz camera

thanks!

Domke has some nice protective wraps which might be more in line with what you are looking for.

Any idea how thick/protective these are? They look pretty thin from the looks of it. Anyone used one of these?

Check out the Rezo TLZ from Lowepro. There are a few in the Rezo line up that may fit the bill.

Are we understanding you correctly that you have a backpack that you want to put your camera into but you want something to protect the camera so it is not floating around by itself. Something that is not going to take up all the space of the backpack. I have one of the wraps I linked mine is not the Domke version but a similar one by OP/TECH USA. It should be sufficient in protecting the camera inside a backpack without taking up much space.

Another alternative would be to get an insert that goes inside camera bags. Here is a list that B&H has in stock by several different brands.
