Bush Hawk

I've just bought a Bush Hawk. Wanting to save some money and wanting dual switches, I bought the scope version that doesn't come with a trigger or wiring for a camera. This was $81 from B&H. The shoulder mount with trigger is listed as $160 so it is a bit of savings.

I used an ebay $4 remote to supply the cable. I looked around at other cables and this was simply the best option for me. If you where so inclined, you could buy the female coupling and recreate a full featured model. I don't think the cable not being removable is going to be an issue for me. I can at anytime redo the cable if the interface to the cameras ever change.

The unit comes with a solid plug, in what I assume is the hole for the connection in the full featured Bush Hawks. I found the plug was just large enough to drill a hole through to get the casing of the shutter wire in. The casing doesn't go all the way thought the plug, but is crimped in the hole by the plug's mounts. I simply cut the casing away from the three wires of the remote and threaded the wires through.

The micro switches are from my junk box. I pulled them from AT or ATX computer cases about 10 years ago. They are the reset buttons without the plastic buttons. The micro switches had pigtails on them, so I simply twisted the wires from the sacrificed remote shutter to the pigtails and taped them.

To create the mount for the micro switches, I used some 6mm black foamie cut to shape, The foamie is also packed around the insides to keep everything in place.

You can see where I used gaffers tape to hold the two micro switches together. Although it looks like the foamie is also surrounded by tape it isn't. I tried it, but the with the tape around everything it just wouldn't fit. I had to remove the tape and this left some tape residue on the foamie. This actually made it easier to get everything back together so I didn't redo it.

This is the end result. The padded arm is from a child's crutch that I had purchased at a thrift store. The QR plate is a Kirk 1.75 inch 1/4-20 mount the I got from ebay for $50.

It took about 30-60 minutes to take everything apart, do the mods, and put everything back together. I want to still make the mount for the dual handle, but haven't quite figured out how yet. I also want to make a couple of buttons for the micro switches. I was hoping to use the nibs from a track point on a laptop, but their mount is too big. I think I'll try making the buttons out of an eraser next. I also want to create a badge over the foamie and switches, but again need to think about how to do it.

Thank you
Russell

*peeking* What that bracket looks like is the wrench for a circular saw blade: maybe you could start with one of those and add whatever handle you like?
