everyone looks the same, using the same equipment and getting the same photos.. how boring.they would rather do this than say strive for national geographic? .... I don't even remotely see the joy in this regardless of the money.

That's what I was thinking. I enjoy sports photography, but this?
Just imagine the savings if they all cooperated and just had 2 or 3 people there.
Quite alot happens at an olympic stadium. I imagine photographers seldom bunch up and photograph the same event all the time. However this picture reminds me of press releases and surely there, they could select a few photog's which would be more than enough. But then there would be fewer paid photog's in the world...
Funny thing . . . the left-eye shooters (right side of frame) jumped out at me, then I looked at the gear.
I didn't even notice. I'm a left-eye shooter and I've wondered how many do that.

I notice, too, where are any (even 1) female photographers.
Maybe it gets too rugged, with elbowing and jostling to get the best shot.
Shame.Women take very good photos as well!!
#I think I may, just may, see one in the photo just above. Is that a female to the right side of that press box (a couple of rows back)??

I keep having the vision of one of the photographers on the end getting up to move away, grabbing his camera bag with the strap caught around the next guys monopod and down the whole row goes like a domino game.

What I like is the guy in the center of the first row (right over the olympic rings). He's looking toward the photographer who took the shot and seems to be thinking "What the H are you taking pictures of us for?"

Ahhh yes - the heard has been coraled.
The guy NOT looking with the rest is a *ist - he's looking to see where the REAL action IS.

The thought that popped into my head (after the holy crap moment) was that there are only 4 actual photogs there. 2 from Canon and 2 from Nikon. The rest are hired stand ins with dummy cameras to promote one or the other brands.
Not a Pentax lens (yet I hope), but I wonder if Sigma rolled out that monster 200-500 f2.8 for the Olympics, even if it was just the pre-production model. If anything I would think they'd do it for the press...
