white cast on pics due to UV filter

Hello all

I have this Tiffen UV filter and for some reason on this day it gave a white cast across my whole pic. The first pic is with it on and the other is with it off. What do you think may have caused this?

UV ???

Even i have had my doubts about the UV. Some cheap one I got once used to give a ghost image. I just use the ring now, taken out the glass.

Maybe when you packed your bag this morning you picked up the "crap photo" filter instead of the UV filter. It certainly did its job.

I'm thinking of leaving UV filters behind completely. already removed them from most of my lenses, and if i ever go rock climbing or base jumping ill have to invest in a HOYA pro1 D protector

It looks as if the contrast is gone. Did you use a lens hood or could bright light from outside of the frame have hit the filter and created some sort of flare effect?

I don't think even Saran Wrap could make an image look that muted. Did you try taking more than one photo with that filter on? I think something went fubar with either light entry or even possibly fogging up of the lenses?

To my eye, you have a flare problem with the UV filter you used. Looking at the shadows on the car, the hazy sun was in front of the camera. If you must use a UV filter, make sure you buy only a top of the line filter.

Many years ago, I put them on all my lenses for "protection". I don't even own any any more (unless they are in that cubic metre of photo stuff in the basement). In the cases when I need a UV reduction, I usually also want to use a polarizer, so that's what I use. And I paid quite a bit of money for mine.

For this shot I used my FA 50 mm. It didn't come with a hood and I wanted to protect my new lens so I bought this Tiffen UV filter for about $20. Looks like I got ripped off, eh?

Take some more shots with and without it the filter. While I don't particularly like using filters, I do find myself in a lot of situations where they keep crap off my lens. Ever had a dog stick its nose too your lens? or a toddler's finger? That doesn't even get into situations with macro or chugging through the woods etc.

I bought an old vivitar tele on ebay, and was very disappointed with the contrast it gave, until i removed the UV filter from it, it was pretty much the difference between your two pictures.
