uploaded pictures

Hi guys, I just have one general question. Why is it that when I upload any pics they turn into soft and contrastless?
Viewing the same pics in ACDSee or Win Picture gallery or PPB they look great even downsised to 800x534 pix. As soon as I upload them at the same resolution, they look terrible.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Thanx Peter

Are your photos in AdobeRGB or sRGB? If I recall correctly, most programs can't show AdobeRGB photos properly.

Try using a site such as flickr or smugmug to upload your photos to then use the insert image option by posting the url.

I never use Adobe RGB, and I'm not really bothered opening accounts on some other pages just so I can show pics here. Thanx for trying to help guys. Any other ideas why this is happening?

I process pics on my AMD PC with Win Vista. PEF to TIFF conversion in PPL and then TIFF to JPEG with some tweaks in CS3. For viewing I'm using old ACDSee 5. But if I view the pics either on my PC or my laptop using either ACDSee or windows's pic viewer they look great. I "calibrated" both screens so I know what to expect. The problem comes up when I upload pic as attachment to post in some thread. It dramaticaly looses sharpness and somewhat contrast too. For this I'm using Toshiba laptop with Win Vista and IE7 (I tried firefox but the same resuls)...
any ideas?!?

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that uploaded pics get converted by the sites online software.

here are the options in a sticky on how to post photos

How to post photos
There are three ways of posting photos in your threads:

1. Link to an off-site image (embed the photo URL)
2. Attach images directly* (use the attachment feature when posting in advanced mode)
3. Post images in the user gallery (upload your photos to the user gallery, and then embed the photo URL)

To embed photo URLs in your posts, wrap the URL with image tags ().
You can also use the appropriate photo button in the WYSIWYG editor and enter the URL in the prompt.

*Note that attached images will automatically be placed in your posts- they do not need to be embedded using the above method.

Thanks for reading! If you guys have any additional questions, feel free to ask

and this other sticky thread

In the user photo gallery, the images you upload are resized to 600 pixels regardless of original resolution, but if you click the image, you'll get it in its full dimensions.

As for attachments, all images are resized to 800 pixels wide if they exceed that width.

I can't control off-site images, however, so if they're wider that 600 pixels, it would be better to link to them using [url] tags rather than embedding them with [img] tags.

EXIF info is always great to have- I've added special fields to the user photo gallery, but again, I can't control whether or not it's posted in threads.

This may not really effect anything, but everytime you convert an image, you change it's properties. In this case you have 2 conversions: PEF to TIFF, then TIFF to JPEG. Probably doesn't make much of a difference, but something to think about.

Its true, as the other OP mentioned, that some photo sites alter the picture. They streamline it for faster download, compress the heck out of it to use less drive space, and sometimes change the resolution in the process. Try cutting out the 'middle man' and see if you get better results. View your pictures in your usual web browser off of your hard drive. It depends on which one you are using, but under the File menu, there will be an option like open, open file, open url, etc. You may have to explore around until you figure it out. It should give you a window that you can browse your hard drive. Find your picture and see if it has the same viewing results as your ACDsee. If it looks like you want it, then its the site you upload to. If not, then I would suggest trying a different browser and repeating the test.

Hope this helps you out some.
Randy

This doesn't really answer your question but why don't you just open the PEG straight in Photoshop?

I have tried, but was never able to get good looking pic out of ACR... I just can't get the colours and saturation right. With PPL I know exactly what I'm getting and then during TIFF/JPEG conversion I know how to control everything do desired effect...

I've encountered that problem as well and have attributed it to the compression that the image undergoes when being uploaded. I use Windows Live Spaces for photo hosting because I like the interface and there's a ton of available storage, but I've been looking into other options because of this issue. I've recently gotten into experimenting with Jalbum and so far have liked the results.

AXL

in honesty to help resolve your issue I do suggest you open an account with filckr or smugmug for free and try uploading a photo of good quality then link it to here and see the result

I know your not wanting to do this long term but at least you will know if site software is the cause or not

I had similar complaints, a few years ago, but i found using Save for web in PS and using sRGB colour space solved 99% of those problems.

Flickr and photo.net show my photos as converted, so i'm happy
