If you were shooting digital I'd say to just try a few things, and see what works best for you. But that's tough while shooting film.
So... When I shot fireworks I used a tripod, and highly recommend it.
For that mater I wouldn't try it without one.
If I remember correctly I used ISO200, around f-16, and around a 10 second exposure.
With pretty good results, although I didn't post them, and I can't confirm anything until I get home and have the time to actually look it all up.
There were several fireworks posts done the first week of July. In my opinion the best thing to do is look through them, and find your favorite.
Look at the data, it'll give you a place to start.
If I remember correctly there was even a brief tutorial done on it as well.
