Gimp & Raw

Shot in RAW for the first time tonight, and it looks like it makes a .pef file? Anyways, Preview on my Mac will open it, but I don't have Gimp on the mac so I opened them in gimp on my PC, as I put all of my files on an external drive, which is connected to the PC but the mac can read and write to it through the network. Gimp can't open them. ? Is there something I must do to the .pef to make it so gimp can see it? It opens, but it is "transparent," like, all you see are the gray squares....

You might want to follow this thread - appears to have a lot of good information.

Linux, windows, lightzone, & dual boot.

I have used the UFRaw plug in for the Gimp and it seems to work fine for converting my PEF files. You can get it at the Gimp plug in registry or here.

After you convert the PEF, then you can save it as a JPG or TIF. Or at least thats what I do.

Yup, UFRaw is great, although if you want noise reduction before 0.12 is released you'll need to run the bleeding-edge CVS release.

Yeah, that's really my only complaint with the UFRaw is that it has a little more noise then the raw conversions done with PPL. It would be nice to have noise reduction built into the UFRaw program.

See my previous post. NR coming in 0.12 (It's in UFRaw CVS now), works very well.

If you're on a Linux box it's easy enough to check out UFRaw CVS and compile it, a bit harder on Windows, not sure if anyone provides CVS binary builds for Windows.

About how long would you say until the UFRaw .12 release that would work on my windows machine? It sounds like that's the one I want!

No clue. It's ready when it's ready, I'm not one of the developers.

Doesn't seem like anyone is doing CVS nightlies for UFRaw unfortunately, and I don't have the time to try and get a crosscompile setup going.
