EV low light focus question

I have noticed that in low light, dropping the ev a couple of notches allows my K10D to get a focus lock. It seems counter intuitive to what you would have to do to get a focus. Does anyone know just what is going on with this?

Dropping the EV as in... exposure compensation?

Yes. Exposure compensation.

I'll try that on my K100D. Experience, though, tells me that when it loses it, it loses it completely. The focus lock, of course.
