General Photography - Techniques & StylesDiscuss the fundamentals of photography, photographic technique, infrared and macro shooting, and related topics here!
Regarding the original discussion I did some street photos today that turned out o.k. I think. I used the 77mm and hardly anybody noticed me even if I were shooting them from 2 metres away.
I think the biggest factor is having a small lens. Nothing draws attention like huge f/2.8 zooms. Also by having a light prime you can position yourself with the camera down and when the moment arrives just put the camer to your eye with one hand and shoot. Not practical with a zoom since a second hand is needed for the zoom ring, and time is wasted zooming.
Well, I'm accustomed to holding cameras by a lens, being accustomed to manual focus, anyway, but I think you're right about those big zooms attracting more attention. I don't know how much real advantage there is trying to one-hand things. I sometimes find myself wanting to one-hand it in order to not-break-eye contact with a subject if we're semi-clowning around, though.
I just want to thank everyone contributing to this thread. There are great shots on display here, and I'm learning a lot.
I'm heading to Paris in 2 weeks, and I plan to finally get over my reservations and try my hand at street photography. I plan on using the FA35, FA50/1.7, and FA77. I'll also bring the 12-24, but because of its size I think I'll use it for architectural shots only.
The downside of this thread is that I now lust for the DA21 or DA15...

Ooh, that sounds like fun.
And I hear you about the wides, I think my kit wants for a 21, one of these days. (I like my wides small and out of the way till I need em. For now, there's the kit lens, which at least doesn't *weigh* much. )
I went to Salem MA last year when I was first starting off in photography. This was before I knew what my ISO was, and it was set at 1000 When they caught me taking pictures of them they told me to delete them So I came up with a method where I sweep my camera as if looking around, and taking a picture. Also my sister bought a retired government truck from an auction with very tinted windows that work well too
some unedited pics from that day. cant find the edited pictures in my index but I have the originals

That is a good set of lenses for this purposes. Where I find the DA 21mm the most useful is indoors or in narrow alleys and streets. I used to have f2.8 20-40mm lens but couldn't take it many times on air travel due to its size, so I got the DA 21mm and traded the 20-40mm for its brother the Sigma 15-30mm.
Remember with street photography, it is ALL practice.
I went for walk to test out my new to me Vivitar 24f/2.8 lens this afternoon / evening and found me a beauty to test it on. I saw her, told her I loved what she did with her hair and told her to give me a smile with that pretty face and whala...
By the way. Which do you folks prefer. The color or black and white?
It is extremely rare for me to call a photograph perfect, but this one is in every possible way. If I had the money I would buy a print of this from you in a heartbeat.

By the way. I should note as should be obvious, that I do not hide (conceal) my camera to go back to the O.P. I believe this is why I get some decent captures. Not all and sure some people get upset, but more than anything, my encounters are usually good.
