Tour de France photos - did you see this photographer?

Watching stage 12 today, a motorcycle photographer pulled up along side the riders and lifts a massive "camera" system. It looks like two dslrs side by side. Left one a Nikon, think the other was the same. Petal lens shades were the same on both lenses. There was an articulated rod above both cameras attached to the lenses. Both lenses seemed to be synchronized. Couldn't tell if the focusing or zooming was being syncronized. Any body else see this?

Only thought of a couple reasons for two matching cameras. Either different focal lengths - which didn't appear to be the case or 3D. Can't imagine much need for 3D action photography stills. Could they be using this for 3D video? Would be something to see.
thanks

I didn't see it, but 3d video would be a logical guess. Maybe you will see the shot in a commercial or documentary eventually.

Something like this?

I remember seeing it being mentioned on another forum, but I don't know what it is either.

It seems to be something build to take stereoscopic pictures, we can see a bar linking the two focusing rings

Thats the camera. Seeing it here, looks like the one on the right isn't a Nikon. This has to be an expensive setup!
thanks

I've seen stereo rigs before but I don't really ever get to see the 3d images. I'd like to see more of that.

I wonder why he doesn't sit on the bike backwards. I've seen other photogs do that and it must be easier to work, rather than twisted round as he is.

Sorry didn't mean to thread hijack, just thinking out loud.

Aside from that camera, I'm always amazed at the photographers and spectators (often drunk) and all of the distractions the TdF riders have to negotiate, in addition to each other.
