Annie Liebovitz recommends iPhone as "snapshot camera of today"

AppleInsider | Annie Liebovitz recommends iPhone as "snapshot camera of today"

QuoteQuote:
In an interview with NBC's "Rock Center" promoting her new book "Pilgrimage," Liebovitz flatly answered that the iPhone is the "snapshot camera of today," perhaps suggesting a link with popular cameras of the past used to capture everyday photos.

For pictures of pets and children to show to friends and relatives with no pretense of photographic control other than composition, perhaps it is. I have no interest in that.

Actually she's broke, it's the best she can afford right now

I do like some of her work, but I also wonder sometimes if Annie Lebowitz has half the brains she was born with anymore...

She did say "snapshot" - and most modern phones are perfect for that. I used to carry an Olympus mju mini when I remembered. My BlackBerry gives better results, and I hardly ever forget it. I use it to take 'snaps' od things that catch my eye. For free. Of a quality unheard of in digital even 10 years ago. That's impressive to me.

I wonder whether Annie Leibovitz knows Annie Liebovitz or Annie Lebowitz at all.

She's right in some ways, the cellphone camera is replacing the cheap P&S as the family snapshot camera. I don't know about the Iphone but the camera in my Droid sucks. It's suitable for viewing on my phone but not much more and even a 4x6 print looks awful.

She's not that off base... I have to admit that as a "snapshot camera", my iPhone 4s is more than adequate. Note that I specify "snapshot".

It will never replace my ZS7 as point and shoot, or even come close to my dSLR's, but as a camera thats always on me I think that it does an adequate job for the kind of photo that often ends up being shared on Facebook by moms, dads and teens.

Just my 2 cents

"Snapshot " is the operative word. If she said portrait photography then I'd be thinking I need to clean out my ears, but as others have said iPhones are as good or better than cheap (and some not so cheap) p&s cameras.

I think the 4 and 4s were the breakthrough models, they've now hit a point that quality is more than high enough for a snapshooter (mostly posted to FB and the like, maybe some small prints being made. coupled with he apps available like hipstamatic you can get some interesting stuff with one (i've seen one art show shot on a 4 with hipstamatic in 1:1 printed 12 x 12 and it was completely good enough for how it was being used. The other plus is you are pretty likely to have it with you - "the best camera is the one you have with you"
Annie shot (maybe still does) most of her stuff with the monstrously large RB then RX 67 mamiyas. but she had assistants (read slaves) to do the heavy lifting)
She's a good tog IMO but obviously a crap businesswoman

I think she's right. I can't remember the last time someone pulled out a photo out of their wallet to show me their kids...grandkids...new dog...new car...whatever. They always whip out their cellphone and pull up the pics from there.

There is a lot of work produced with the iphone that may change your mind.
For example, this work by our own jsherman The iphone Gets the Call

I've seen Journalism from war zones done on an iPhone too. like any other photographic tool the result has more to do with the photographer than the equipment
As a matter of fact the series linked won an international award for photojournalism (and raised a stink in the process as perhaps the work was more art than journalism)

I would hardly call $400+ for a snapshot camera 'cheap'? Because that is what you are really paying for an iPhone regardless of the hook to get you in the door. $150 plus 2 yr contract?
The main benefit of the phone camera is that like the watch it is mostly used for, you always have it with you.

I wouldn't call it cheap either. but since most people go on a contract to them it's $0 to $150 (4 or 4s depending on the deal) and they want the phone anyways because as my wife once said it's got Apps (damn good marketing I was trying to get her to look at a laptop alternative to an iPad and the first thing she said it doesn't have apps though
