Or does anyone else find themselves oggling other camera users when walking around? I did it on my cruise-noticed one pentax other than mine....and i do it every day in NYC. lots of canons and nikons, but today rushing to catch my train after running off the ferry, i swore i saw a woman, no older than me, and I swear she was rockin' the pentax.
just another reason I'd love to see the pentax forums get some swag-hats for me
Recently I took a trip to Puerto Rico. I found myself doing that constantly. I guess I trying to find other members of the super secret Pentax owners club or something. On my hike up El Yunque I saw a k10d and a *ist DL. Gave me a nice warm feeling. Though It must of looked odd to the owners that I was staring at their cameras. :-)
I'm always surprised how few people with a Pentax I run into considering how many gazillions of K100's are being sold in big box stores and all over the place.
Nope it's not just you. But for me the worst offender is my wife!! She has no interest in shooting but when she spots a DSLR, she's tapping me on the shoulder.
Same here, always on the look out for fellow Pentax users! Pentaxians here have regular meets and shoots too... a crazy bunch of photogs in my opinion The few, the loud, and the proud...
Oh yes....guilty.
I like to watch other photographers, to see how they go about their craft.
But I'm not sure whether to be flattered or annoyed when I am copied while taking shots. One of the funniest examples was in Beijing recently, whilst waiting for someone to return from a comfort stop I was messing around taking some 'different' shots, experimenting with angles, foregrounds etc etc.
This was all off to one side of the main attraction (Temple of Heaven), and as Iturned and stepped away I was almost run over by a tour group who all rushed in to take the same shots from where I had been kneeling...!!???
Or does anyone else find themselves oggling other camera users when walking around? (snip)
Of course. It seems most camera users do this. On a recent trip downtown, I noticed one woman with a small P&S actually bending over considerably and tilting her head awkwardly to get a glimpse of the name brand on my camera. I quickly held it up for her to see and smiled, but she was obviously embarrassed by the thought of getting caught and promptly walked away. I, on the other hand, would have been quite happy to show her the camera and discuss it.
Like GWP, I've also had other camera users follow me around trying to copy what I'm photographing. Two fairly recent incidents come to mind, the first told to me by my wife. While photographing a busy downtown festival (a paid job for the city), it seems an elderly man and woman were following me. My wife, who usually waits while I move in for tight shots of the various booths and venders, noticed these two trying hard to get the same shots as mine. She said it was funny because neither were as aggressive (when moving in for tight shots) as I usually am in these situations, but they were trying nonetheless (then quickly rushing after me for the next shot).
In the second incident, I photographed a young model (in a busy park) sitting beside a statue of a man reading a newspaper, with her hand on his shoulder, leaning over like she was reading the newspaper as well (a campy pose that worked well for this young model). Afterwards, we moved off to get another photograph and then walked by the statue again. Two woman, obviously Asian tourists, were trying to get the exact same picture, pose and all. The model told me she had saw the women watching earlier. When the woman posing noticed us walking by, she told her friend with the camera, who turned to see us, giggled and waved. My quickly drawing the camera up to grab a shot of the woman posing left them both laughing profusely.
It's not uncommon to try and find other users. I know I do it also. BrendanPK and I have done a few shoots together and have run in to a couple of other users on each shoot. We shot the Pennsylvania Ren fair this year and ran into two other users with K10s, and we had stopped at a stand watching how they made swards and knives and one of the guys in the stand talked to us for almost 20 min. about Pentax He loved the cameras. Brendan with his K10 and me with my trusty DL and Brendan's other k10. We both noticed people looking to see what we were shooting with. (But then again they could have been staring at Brendan's legs, He was waring his Kilt. Or as I call it his Irish skirt.)
When I go to Longwood Gardens I often check to see if other photographers are using any Pentax gear. I have seen a few there. It's always good to see a Pentax.
and yes when forum members get together for shoots We are the loud and proud. We have every right to be. WE SHOOT PENTAX.
Sure, I always check out others' gear, and will even go and chat up any fellow photogs who appear approachable and not too busy to talk. Doesn't matter too much what they're shooting, but it is a small pleasure to come across another Pentaxian.
Quilty as others - human nature now that it is a passion of mine - it's like coming to a stop light in your '69 Shelby (I wish!!) and a 71'Cudda pulls up you check each other out smile and nod. It is funny reading some of the stories - some are more than willing to chat while others feel embarrassed and still others feel violated ... different strokes I guess.
Last photographers meeting I went to, anybody who owned a DSLR had either the Canon EOS 300D, 350D or... 400D. It's shameful to find the extent of a bandwagon mentality here.
