I'd invest in a K20D so I had two bodies and the FA*300 in addition to what I have. That'd be me ready. Then I'd spend all that energy thinking about gear instead researching the athletes, venues, etc. and planning out shots.

from reading his posts i understand that he sets up cameras at remote locations and has them take pictures automaticaly?
is this what sports photography has come down to? put a camera at every corner and hook it up to a small laptop and go hang out at the local tea shop hooking up with the local girls.
They are still shooting when the have remotes set up. Usually they will be shooting with a long lens for tight shots and then the have a PW on that camera. The other PW is on a remote camera usually shooting a wider angle of the same action. Quite useful really.
The "remote" cameras are setup in locations where there is not room for photographers (for instance, on top of the backdrop on a basketball court, or right at the finish line for the running races) or at multiple points around a track, allowing the photographer to take photos from several vantage points as the race progresses. They are seldom set up to trigger themselves. Joe Photog still has to hit the button on the radio trigger.
p.s. great point squarerigger. I'll have to show this to my wife. Put my paltry lens collection in proper perspective! I don't think she will buy it though...

Anybody have an estimate of the cost of all that gear? How on earth does a businessperson amortize that cost unless the magazine is underwriting the equipment? What is the average per-image sale value for Olympics-level sports photos?
