Well the 50D is out soon

Canon EOS 50D Hands-on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

on paper its a very serious contender

and in my honest opinion, if the quality and feel of the images are just a high-rez version of my buddies 30D, then we have some heavy competition going on.

apperantly no 5D replacement though

not a huge jump, but a small evolution. i don't know why everyone is clamoring for a radical change, the xxD bodies have been great. features that stood out for me (better or equal to the K20D)

big screen
dust mapping
af adjust
15 mp
vignetting correction
multiple stage NR
small raw sizes
some DR options
wireless grip
better live view

with this coming out and the D90 around the corner, i can see why the K20D has been dropping in price.

i admit it ... i'm tempted :P ... and canon has more lenses than nikon that i would want

You guys are forgetting ISO 12800! That is HUGE!

This is not a small upgrade, it's the biggest single upgrade since 10D-20D.

And native ISO 3200....

but how does that make it special in any way? ISO 3200 is more than enough for even the darkest of situations. for what reason am I to be impressed with big numbers? that's all this canon really is. please tell me in what everyday situation will anything above 3200 be absolutely necessary? 6400? much less 12800. people need to stop getting giggly like a school girl over features that aren't even useful day to day. another case of 'I one uped you, your move' cameras, typical.

I disagree, I shoot concerts in dark clubs and even with the fastest primes I can get, I struggle to get SS fast enough to stop motion at ISO 3200. It also allows people who have slower lenses to shoot natural light and in lighting conditions they were never able to before.

Usable high ISO for me is the most important new feature. Way more so then live view, MP, FPS, etc.

Dude....
I wouldn't really mind it if the guy was getting all excited over the 'usefullness' of the COLOR of the camera body. The point needn't even be made, that there is no reason NOT to get excited about something if you really want it. Right?

I tend to think about high iso power like this:

Take the D3 with iso 25,600. Let's say you are at a wedding reception, and you want to shoot some natural light. I think the camera with the power to resolve images at really high iso's might have a better chance of resolving a nice image at 3200 iso.
I would rather use the cam that is shooting at 3200 in the proverbial second or third gear, than use a cam that is maxed out at 3200.
Just my philosophy.

So, about the new gear coming out...
If there is a Canon 50D coming out, Pentax might parallel that with a K30D eh?, but I think it's too soon for a 30 isn't it?

And Nikon's most recent release is the D700.
I'm hoping Pentax pulls a FF out of their arse. (and I'm just as excited about that as I am going to be about the color...just because I CAN)
