fotki.com allows ftp access

PS: if you are a republican then photobucket.com allows it too

I am considering ifp3.com

Not sure if they allow FTP (I just asked but havn't heards back yet). They are a bit expensive, but allow unlimited storage and 25GB downstream traffic a month so you are unlikely to run into storage or download issues.

(dang, just noticed... this was my 999th post. must consider my next one carefully as it is a milestone. LOL)

why do you need FTP access? Are you planning on making a website where someone can buy the original 14 megabyte or whatever photograph?

I use SmugMug myself, they three levels of paid service with the upper levels allowing tons of control over your site. FTP however is not supported, but you can use standalone upload programs for Mac and Windows, a variety of plug-ins (Photophop, iPhoto, Lightroom etc), or their web based one. I don't recall any serious *nix support. If you want to you could always roll your own with something like Gallery and a hosted server (Dreamshosts for example, pretty cheap for lots of space).

It's one way of transferring a whole folder off a computer to a site quickly

Sorry rmtagg, i think i used Multiply for that but it's not really a pro site and i think ifp3 does offer the service but alas they don't print for you. You might want to go thru a paid server (godaddy/similar) and setup your own site with something like sitemasher ...if sales warrant it?

The fact that ifp3 does NOT print is one reason I like them. I prefer to control the "production" end myself so that I can insure only high quality prints go to the customer. With sites that print and ship for you, you have no way, short of customer compliments or complaints, of knowing if the prints are any good.

Rosemary,
That site my sis finally put together for me was thru godaddy, but as you know, I'm computer illiterate so can't discuss any meaningful issues about how, what, why, when etc. If an assistant can do it quickly and inexpensively, then I don't attempt it.
Plus, I'm guessing that your intended site is to show and sell directly to customers who are essentially clients rather than guests to your site. You do an advertising shoot or a studio shoot and post the pics, and they (or their ad agency) can purchase the megafiles for production--yes? Thus the requirement for FTP compatibility?
Sounds like your new apprentice position is guiding you deeper into the pro world--bully for you!

Wonderful machine, where I am an apprentice requires it. It is part of how their work flow runs.

Hi Rosemary,

As Tybeck, I also use SmugMug, but for other reasons: the flexibility of presentation is amazing, and you can crop, copy, etc. images online within the site - very slick.

There's more, but ultimately it's whether or not FTP is the show stopper. I use a third party GUI - "Send to Smugmug" which works very, very well.

Regards,
Marc

WOW! You are so right about being in a very professional inviorment! I love it and although I have only been there 3 days I have really learned a lot already. I cant wait to work with some of the marv photogs there. Big surprise, they are really nice and very helpful too I have a shoot tomorrow and have a lot of equip I will be working with, lol. I had a very crash course on lighting today and I took the owners portrait for the web site today too I was thrilled even though I had to stand on a box, lol I oculd not wait to get home to see if they had uploaded his new pic but the web master most likley will not do that until some time this coming week. To be honest he did set up the soft box where he wanted it but it was still thrilling to shoot him

Okay, i think i know now what you're looking for

Is this what you need?

Photography Websites and Artist Web Sites, FolioLink Template Websites to show, sell and promote photography and art online

especially these features:

* Our service is not metered which means that bandwidth is virtually unlimited. The success of your website will not translate into higher hosting fees.
* FTP uploads to maintain a 5,000 Image Archive with easy one click batch uploading for FolioLink Pro Accounts
* Website statistics using Google Analytics

I couldn't find one in PA
