Thank for your offer but we just decided to go for option 4: build a new (larger) computer room in the basement in a part that was used for storage, and build a mezzanine in the garage for storage. Problem solved. More bills to pay!

This was a rough year for everyone in my more extended family. We really cut back on everything and tended to concentrate on the kids for Christmas. We did Secret Santa and limited it to $50.00.

After some research I found a $39.00 monopod and asked for that as my "big" present.

The monopod itself is actually made by Tamron, and the head is a Giottos. It deploys quickly, smoothly, and quietly, the head is decent and has a quick release plate, the foot screws down to reveal a spike. The build quality is decent.

At this price this is a really decent monopod. I like it very much. I use it with the adjustment handle facing away as it does tend to get in the way a little.

Amazon.com: Giottos MV-8250 3 Section Monopod with Built-in Pan/Tilt Head, 59.1" Maximum Height, Capacity 6.6 lbs (3 kg): Electronics

A great idea. We too have done this for the past few years. Initially it was not for the financial situations, however, that did come up this year. It has been rough for many. Besides, if there is something I or my wife wanted, we usually adjusted spending and bought it. To me, it is more fun to get together with family and friends for dinner or treats and watch the kids have fun and open their presents anyway.

Oh, and by the way, my photo gift was a new camera bag to hold the stuff listed in the sig, rather than have it scattered around the house. Nothing special, just a large bag from R**z. BUT we did have lots of fun and take lots of pictures! I really love my Sunpak, although I feel like a total geek sometimes, as I am the one with the tripod out, I have the biggest camera, the big 383 on top with the head pointing up into a 8" tall foamie bounce cup! What a dork! (but everyone wants my pictures!)

Hello everyone - hope you all had a good Christmas ...

I got a Giottos 3290B 5 section monopod with Manfrotto 486RC2 Ball head, 3 x DL150 batteries and 2 Bryan Peterson books (Understanding Exposure and Understanding Shutter Speed) - which makes me very lucky as that's everything (photography related) that I wanted!

Mixed bag for me: an Epson 3800 printer, Lightroom 2.2 and a couple of books on using Lightroom (another learning curve). Things non-photographic: an idiot turned into the right front of my Audi and creamed it. Fortunately, my wife (driving) was not hurt. Waiting for the estimate now.

Good things never come alone. Sorry for your misfortune. The important thing is that nobody was hurt.

Sorry about the tough economic times. Things are looking a little shaky in my household and family lately as well. In our case, the bad news came after the gifts were all purchased.

As for the monopod, I got one of those too...courtesy of Santa Giottos. It came as a bundled promotion with the 9360 tripod. The monopod is a pretty nice unit and very light. I was puzzled by the Tamron labeling, but what the hey!

It's not horrible. We just need to be somewhat judicious. I'll sell some gear if I want a little something more. Sorry to hear it is effecting you too.

That's great. I am considering the 9360 tripod. Would you mind perhaps posting a brief review when you've had a chance to get used to it?

Kind regards,

Seaain

I am planning on posting a review once I get a chance to actually put the 9360 through its paces. It is a pretty flexible unit and I want to make sure that I have everything straight before I post anything.
