White House issues new medical marijuana policy

AP Newsbreak: New medical marijuana policy issued - Yahoo! Finance

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

From what I understand, there's a lot of ambiguity in state laws.

It's about time this law was relaxed and given to the states to decide. Medical marijuana treatment has been proven in many positive ways, has been around since the beginning of time and will be around far longer than the man made pharmaceuticals which come and go thanks to side effects that often lead to lawsuits toward the pharmaceutical companies.

If you have a condition which can be treated by smoking or otherwise ingesting marijuana, providing a better quality of life, more power to you.

It's not the ambiguity that's the problem, it's the variability in laws between states. Some of the states (i.e. California) have state laws that allow medical usage, but since the federal laws are still back in the dark ages WRT medical use, (some of) the federal prosecutors have been happily overriding (trampling) the state laws in pursuit of those evil weed-smokers... If the rest of the states allowed it as well, the feds would have less grounds for this kind of crap.

Jim (and just in case anyone wonders, no I have never smoked the stuff for either medical or non-medical purposes...)
