The Race that Stops a Nation

Yesterday was Melbourne Cup day (Australia's biggest horse race).
I read a Letter in the Newspaper (Newcastle Herald; Letters) from a rather irate husband. This rocked me:

It seems a lady is 8 months pregnant but having major problems.
Her husband took her to her specialist who stated the birth would have to be effected immediately.
He (specialist) rang the Private Hospital to make emergent arrangements for an operation.
What was the earliest possible time it could be fitted in?

Hospital: Friday, 5 or 6 days away.
Specialist : Must be sooner than that, as it is an emergency!
Hospital : Afraid no possibility on Tuesday, that is Melbourne Cup Day and we dont do anything on that day!!

What are we coming to in this country that a B.... Horserace takes top priority over all else.

Wow that is good to know for locals - do not get hurt , sick or in need of any hospital services on that day. I am amazed they gave that for an answer - over here in the Great White North I am sure one could take that response to the courts (although be a moot point as far as care was concerned).

That would be unacceptable for any maternity service.
Don't know if this is the full story, but that's just wrong...

Sad story for sure.

Arpe's post made me snicker though...

I had no luck either in sweepstakes or bet. My son-in-law backed the winner for a nice tidy sum.
Doesn't seem to want to treat the family though

Perhaps we need to whip the health care industry there into shape...

Of course, I hate to continue the streak of puns and beat a dead horse...
