FORT HOOD, Texas – A U.S. Army spokesman says the Fort Hood shootings suspect is alive and was not killed by authorities responding to the attack. Lt. Gen. Bob Cone also says the death toll from the attack remains 12 after another victim died.
Authorities said immediately after Thursday's attack that they had killed the suspected shooter. But Cone now says the suspected shooter is alive and stable condition.
Cone offered little explanation to reporters at a news conference as to why the suspect was believed dead, saying only there was confusion at the hospital.
There are reports now that he was under preliminary investigation for his posts on the web for the last 6 months. Too bad they had not pulled him in prior to today.
Whatever the reason, or lack of reason, it is a true tragedy and our thoughts should be with the families of the slain and those that are wounded. Whether or not it is politically or religiously related matters less than it matters that many hearts are broken tonight. I feel a deep sadness for those involved and those that are left without a loved one they cherished.
Regards
Because this guy has a Arabic sounding name, it isn't surprising or somehow justifies a racist comment like in an earlier post? He obviously wasn't a dullard since he made it to Major in the army...racial comments tied to this horrible act show stupidity, lack of class and a real display of slimy opportunism to justify yet more racist comments in another thread, Disgusting.
Goodness! Well if he is alive and pulls through........ military justice?
Probably. I certainly hope so. He decided that he would rather kill fellow American soldiers than fight Al Q. and Tal. That will likely be considered treason.
According to a report I heard this morning on National Public Radio, he was born in VA and graduated from Virginia Tech. A report I heard yesterday afternoon stated that he was just recently promoted to major. He was first shot by a civilian policewoman (first responder), and she was reportedly killed in the process. The NPR report this morning stated that she was shot, but was not killed.
I heard that on bases you aren't allowed to carry weapons. All arms must be locked up. If you want to go shooting you sign out the gun and when done return it. Heard it on the radio by a soldier stationed at Hood. So much for gun control.
Depends on if you live in "family housing" or in a barracks. Even as a single officer Hasan probably lived in the "family housing" section (they rarely make even junior officers live in the barracks). Military members are allowed to keep and store personal weapons in their "family housing" unit while those in the barracks must store theirs in the Armory. Of course, if he lived off post (very likely as a Major) there are no restrictions on private weapons other than the prohibition on carrying them on post. An MP is unlikely to conduct a pat-down when he drives thru the gate.

Frankly, as a "mental health professional" he should know how to handle that. If he can't do that for himself how can he expect to be able to help sokdiers with similar problems?

I don't know of any post where you are allowed to carry firearms other than to transport them from your "family housing" unit or the Armory to an off post location (and visa versa). You are generally prohibitted from casual carry or conducting business at post facilities.

Unless I am mistaken Hasan was just recently commissioned a Major. You have to understand that doctors largely skip the ranks of 2nd LT, 1st LT and Captain. This A$$ was only a Major because he managed to get thru medical school. And by all reports he wasn't a very good doctor either (reports of problems at Walter Reed during his internship)
My condolences to his victims and their families. Im also sorry hasan thought he was being harrassed (actual or not). However, it's truly pathetic when a coward cannot stand up to the people who may be harrassing him and instead lashes out against innocent people who had nothing to do with his persecution.
“He was doing everything he could to avoid that,” Mr. Hasan said. “He wanted to do whatever he could within the rules to make sure he wouldn’t go over.” (NY Times)
Frankly, the best punishment in this case would be to bust him to private and send his butt straight to Kandahar as a bomb disposal technician.
Sad. Psychiatrist and officer. And an uncharacteristic outburst (according to his family). Doesn't seem suspicious in any other way, just sad. Condolences for the affected families - never thought this would happen on home soil.
So Mike, what will happen to him in the name of justice? The Army to take him into custody and try him? Just curious.
Since it happened on post the Army will try him under The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) in a Court Martial. If he is convicted he will likely be sentenced to imprisonment in a military prison. This will be a relatively quick process since military courts do not work at the lethargic speed of civilian courts. Also, with 13 deaths (so far) he stands a good chance of being executed.

I know Ash... that was just my tongue-in-cheek way of hoping he'll be punished by making him face his greatest fear... deployment to Afghanistan... maybe he could be a one-man bomb disposal unit.

Firstly, Islam is not a race, it is a religion. I do, however, see your point. Just because he has an Arabic sounding name and shouted "Allahu Akbar!" just before opening fire on U.S. Military personnel and civilians is no reason to jump to any conclusions.
