It gets so hot in Central Texas that the paint will blister off a Nikon F3. Don't bother a Pentax, though!

What's your favorite swimming hole for photos? In Austin, a chain of lakes formed by the Lower Colorado River Authority that actually gives use a large participation in water sports. It's a hoot to see so many dive shops and marinas here in the the heart of the state. My favorite actual spot is a place called Inks Lake, north and west of my home near Austin. It's an interesting spot, a mix of lakeside camping and pink granite outcroppings...make for an interesting day of photos.

Well, I know of several good locations right west of Austin, germar. All of the Balcones Canyonlands NWR, especially the Doeskin Ranch (off of FM 1174) and Warbler Vista (off of FM 1431) units, as well as FM 1431 between Lago Vista and Marble Falls (much like a rollercoaster between Lago and Smithwick).

Also good to catch is the Austin Steam Train's Hill Country Flyer that runs between Cedar Park and Burnet, passing through Liberty Hill and Bertram. Bertram itself is quite a nice place, with a nice little "downtown" one block south of TX 29.

Matthew, since you asked, I think this group would be a great place to share little known but great locations for Texas-style photo opportunities. We're lucky enough to all be in the best looking part of the state, and I wouldn't mind getting tips for scenic drives to nice parks and stuff.

I'd also like tips from others about good used camera shops and such. I'm big into finding good old glass and I've got NOTHING in the Austin area that fits that bill.
